SCRIPTURE FOR THE WEEK

A Father's Love Letter:

The Cry of a Father's Heart from Genesis to Revelation

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK

Our Father in heaven, thank you for the personal relationship you offer to us and for loving us so much that you sent your Son to pay for our sins. Draw us closer to you, giving us strength and wisdom to follow You, including the commandment to honor our fathers and mothers. Ground us in our own parenting through our healthy relationship with You.

In Jesus Name, Amen.

A BIBLE MESSAGE FOR FATHERS

This Bible message is for fathers. It highlights the father's responsibility to lead their families with love, discipline, and instruction from God. Verses like Proverbs 23:24 and Ephesians 6:4 emphasize the joy a father experiences when his children are righteous and the importance of not provoking them to anger. Other verses also emphasize the father's role as a provider and protector, as well as God's own role as a compassionate and caring Father.

Key Themes and Verses:

  • Godly Fatherhood: Proverbs 23:24 highlights the joy a father experiences when his son is righteous. Colossians 3:21 instructs fathers not to provoke their children to anger, but to bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
  • Compassion and Care: Psalm 103:13 compares God's compassion to a father's compassion for his children. Luke 15:20 shows a father's compassion for his returning son.
  • Providing and Protecting: Psalm 127:3-5 likens children to arrows in a warrior's quiver, emphasizing their strength and protection. Psalm 68:5 describes God as the Father of the fatherless and the protector of widows.
  • Instruction and Discipline: Proverbs 4:1-4 encourages fathers to instruct their children in the ways of wisdom and discipline. Hebrews 12:7 reminds us that children are disciplined by their fathers.
  • God as Father: Matthew 6:9 teaches the prayer "Our Father in heaven," emphasizing God's role as a loving and caring Father

Here are A few ways that might cause us to think a bit differently about Fathers and our Father in Heaven.

  • Though the Bible doesn’t speak of “Father’s Day”, God emphasizes the importance of fathers (and mothers). “Honor your father and mother—which is the first commandment with a promise—that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth” (Ephesians 6:2-3).
  • Fathers might include anyone serving in that role, including by means of adoption, blended family, extended family care, foster care, and more.
  • As Fathers, we sometimes strive for our children’s earthly success and happiness, but our focus should be far more on their eternal home. One main way to help accomplish that is by modeling it, another is through prayer. It’s never too late (until it is), so we can start today even if our children are old enough to receive social security.
  • Some of us struggle with shame for not doing a good job as a Father. We are reminded in the lyrics "Our sins they are many, His mercy is more", that God wipes the slate clean, however sinful we have been. Psalm 103:12 reads, "...as far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us." But the Bible also teaches that when we become a child of God, we want to obey Him. We learn more about what that means and how to accomplish it through His Word..
  • We sometimes might be inclined to think of God as distant and disinterested. But the very first words that Jesus taught us to pray were “Our Father”. It is humbling to realize that we are invited by the one true God to call Him Abba, an Aramaic word that was common, and one that conveyed personal affection and trust, it’s a word that describes a healthy relationship where a young child puts trust in his or her daddy, who is there to protect and provide. Some of us didn’t have a good relationship with our own fathers, making this imagery more challenging. But as Christians, we are Blessed to have a Father who wants us to deepen our relationship with Him, is steadfast, keeps His promises, protects us, and provides for us. We are even encouraged to approach Him with “boldness” (Hebrews 10:19) and in “full assurance of faith” (Hebrews 10:22). And what about that inheritance! (Romans 8:16–17).

Happy Father’s Day!

Help Build the Future of Equitable Arts in Pittsburgh

Freedom House Theatre Company is a new Black-led performance organization based right here in Pittsburgh. Founded by Sister Nicole “Nikki” Harvin, who serves as our Founder and Executive Artistic Director, we are building a multidisciplinary arts company that uplifts Black, Indigenous, and other historically silenced voices through bold, visionary stage works — while providing salaried, benefits-backed jobs for dancers, musicians, actors, and playwrights.

As we grow, we’re inviting trusted community members to join our Bridge Committee — a small group helping us connect with people who may be interested in supporting this mission as major donors.

We’re not asking you to fundraise. Just to help us build the bridge.

Who We’re Hoping to Reach

We’re looking to connect with individuals who care deeply about equity, legacy, and the transformative power of the arts — and who have the capacity to give.

These may be professionals in law, medicine, real estate, tech, the arts, or business. They may already be involved in philanthropy, community work, or faith-based giving. Most of all, they want their resources to matter — and they give when they trust the vision.

If someone comes to mind — or if you’d like to be part of this effort — please reach out to Sister Nicole “Nikki” Harvin in person or by email at nikki_harvin@freedomhousetheatre.co.
