VBS needs your help NOW!

VBS at GPUMC

July 28 to Aug 1

9 am to 11:30 am

Vacation Bible School begins next Monday, and Emily Bianchi and her crew need your help in several ways:

  • Please stay after worship service on Sunday morning to help erect the massive tent that VBS relies on to provide its outdoor classroom. The younger and stronger you are, the better to help! The more hands that show up, the faster the work will get done.
  • VBS still needs several group leaders for kids from pre-school to 3d grade. Group leaders will lead groups of kids from station to station during the week. Contact Emily if you’re available for this job or sign up here.

Last call: Blessings in a Backpack

GPUMC has always been very generous about donating to buy and fill backpacks for children served by the Methodist Children’s Home. (See the photo above for what we donated last year!)

This year, we are falling short of the supplies needed to send these kids off to school in style.

Ashley Deeb has extended the deadline until next Sunday, July 27 and specifically requests the following items from you:

  • Scientific calculators
  • Lunch boxes
  • 3-ring binders
  • Refillable water bottles
  • Tape
  • Spiral-bound notebooks
  • Boxes of tissues
  • Disinfecting wipes
  • School clothing for children ages 5-18

Many of you have already given, but, if you can dig a little deeper and donate again, we know the Methodist Children's Home will really appreciate our support.

GPUMC supports soccer, immigrant rights

About 90 GPUMCers attended last Friday night soccer match between the Detroit City Football Club and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. It was a scoreless game but the weather was great and the company couldn't be beat!

Many thanks to coach Danny Dichio (who's a member of our congregation and at left in the photo) for comping the tickets for the evening.

On behalf of the GPUMC soccer fans, Rev. David Eardley presented a check for $4,000 to support the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, which is the team's charity for this year. In presenting the check, Rev. Eardley said, "GPUMC is very thankful to support such a worthy, important, and necessary cause that honors DCFC’s commitment to respecting all persons and reflects our core value of loving like Jesus and caring for all of our neighbors."

Fun and good works at the same time? That's a winning combination. Go Le Rouge!

Update on supporting the food pantry

Until late August, please bring all of your donated food items for the Immanuel United Methodist Church food pantry to church and leave in the designated box in the Activity Entrance area. Do not leave them on the porch at the Blundens' home!

A reminder that, as you consider your support for Immanuel during the coming year, you are always invited to:

  • Order from an Amazon wish list that Leslie Rutland-Tipton has put together for us. You can order food directly from her list and have it delivered to her home. She will make arrangements to get the food delivered to Immanuel.
  • Donate canned goods and other non-perishable items in the box in the Activity Entrance.
  • Make your own cash donation to Immanuel, either as a one-time donation or through a recurring payment. Follow this link to set up an account for that purpose.
  • Buy a gift card to Meijer or Kroger valued at $50, $100, or more. Deliver those directly to Paul or Beth Blunden.

However you choose to support this important mission, THANK YOU!

Updates on GPUMC members

Mike Lorenz (above) shot a career-first, hole-in-one — 176 yards with a 4 hybrid — while playing in an invitational tournament in Birmingham on July 12. One of the best parts? Because it was a tournament, the other players loudly showed their appreciation for his accomplishment! Congratulations, Mike!

Jim & Cathy Cupples extend their thanks for the outpouring of love and support from the congregation following the death of his father, William A. Cupples, earlier this month.
