Message from the Chair
Happy New Year, Area 12!
I hope all of you had an amazing 2024 holiday season, but now it’s “new year, new you,” as the saying goes. Do you have any New Handbell Year resolutions? I’ll tell you mine:
- Finish cataloging my church’s handbell music library
- Upload our purchased-as-digital and reproducible music to the church’s One Drive
- Organize a polishing party
- Work on malleting technique with my ringers
- attend more Guild events
and last, but definitely not least:
- Tell my ringers how much I appreciate them and their work.
We all have busy lives (me included!), so I want to make sure they know how much I appreciate them taking precious time out of their schedules to come to rehearsal each week and work on music for our worship services. They could do a dozen other things with their Thursday nights, but instead they come to handbell rehearsal!
I also appreciate each and every one of you reading this newsletter. I’m sure there are a dozen other things you could be doing right now, too! All of us here on your board share a love of this instrument and the people who play, direct, teach, and write for it, and we hope you know how much we appreciate all of you every day.
May your 2025 be full of love, laughter, and handbells!

Area 12 Needs YOU!
Our Area 12 Board is an amazing group of volunteers. We meet four times a year and enjoy working together. We’d love you to consider joining us! We did not hold an election in the fall of 2024 because, according to our By-Laws, we need two candidates for each position (Secretary, Treasurer, and the 6-year Chair cycle of Chair-Elect, Chair, Past Chair). The election for new board members will begin in February.
If you would like more information about what is involved in any of the positions, want to run, or know someone you think would be good in volunteering for one of these positions please contact us at PastChair.Area12@handbellmusicians.org.

Dear CenCal,
Happy holidays to you and yours. Opus Handbell Ensemble played several concerts in Modesto with our new director, Lisa Traughber. A wonderful time was had by all. My church handbell choir played on Christmas morning with eight ringers (plus me), the largest ensemble we’ve had in many years. I’m looking forward to attending the Twelfth Night Festival in Las Vegas in less than two weeks, and I hope to meet many of you there. Happy New Year!

Howdy!
I'd like to introduce you to another group in Northern Nevada/Eastern Sierra. BelCanto has been dedicated to promoting the art of handbells since 1998. By sharing and teaching through performance and workshops, this quintet has demonstrated the versatility of handbells in California, Washington, Colorado, and Hawai'i as well as Nevada.
The current members of BelCanto are Theresa Benedetti, Lynn Chevillon, Diane Bell, Debbie Vaughan, and Barb Walsh. Together, they have over 185 years of handbell experience!
I'm hoping everyone had great performances during this Christmas season. Here's a picture of Tintabulations at Spirit of the Season.
Happy ringing in the New Year!

Teachers: Would you like the use of a three octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?
Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.
To support the development of such programs, Area 12 has six 3-octave sets of handbells and three 3-octave sets of handchimes for loan.
To learn more about the responsibilities and procedures for participating in this program, click here.
