Greetings, Area 12 —

I hope all of you have had a great start to your ringing season! My church group has even played in worship once already and is preparing for this month's offering, as well as Advent and Christmas.

Since the last time I wrote to you, your Board gathered in Livermore (some via Zoom) to hold our biannual meeting. We heard reports from all around the Area, made decisions about some things that we had been working on, spent some time over meals to get to know each other a bit better, and spent a good bit of time talking about next year’s Area conference Neon City Rhythms (affectionately known as “NCR”).

We are offering NCR sponsorship opportunities to members and vendors! Each sponsor will be prominently recognized in the event program, on our website, and in person at the event.

Here are some of the things you can sponsor:

  • A class room for $300 or a class for $100
  • The conductor’s podium for $100
  • Snacks for the attendees for $300
  • The massed ring for $500
  • The Director’s Seminar for $500
  • The clinician’s meals for $200

Last weekend, I flew to Phoenix, AZ, to attend a concert by a new group in Chandler called “Bells Beyond.” They commissioned and premiered ten new works for handbells. (I’m don’t think that has ever been done before!) Some of the composers had previously written for handbells others had not. Three of the composers were from Area 12. Jim Meredith of Oakland (Artistic Director of Sonos) wrote the opening piece Gather Us In, which featured cello, chimes, singing bells, and water bells, as well as audience participation; Michael Roth of Los Angeles wrote the second piece Conflagration, the highlight of which was a back-and-forth “battle” between groups of ringers, mirroring the conflict in today’s world; and UC San Diego PhD student Daniel Cui wrote Echo of a Soft Touch, a lovely tribute to a friend who had passed away. Three of the composers were from Phoenix, AZ, and others hailed from Illinois, Massachusetts, and New York.

As always, reach out to a board member if you need anything. We'd love to hear from you!

Happy ringing!

Secretary

Board Meeting News

The Area 12 board had a very productive meeting September 13-14 in Livermore, CA, hosted by our Communications Director, Cathy Griggs. One of the main topics at our meeting was the planning of the 2026 summer conference, which will be held in Summerlin (near Las Vegas) on campus at Faith Lutheran School. The theme for the conference is Neon City Rhythms and will be held on June 18-20, 2026. Save the date – it is going to be awesome!

Another key topic of discussion at the meeting was to start the preparations for our board elections coming up in the summer of 2026. We have approved the addition of a new board position of Member At Large. This position will be appointed by the executive committee of the board and will be an additional resource for the board. If you think you might be interested in being a member of the Area12 Board, please contact Marci Nuoffer at pastchair.area12@handbellmusicians.org. There are open positions! I am new to the board this year and I have to say that it is a great way to get involved and to stay connected with friends that are also on the board.

Area 12’s next board meeting will be Jan 17th, 2026. Please let us know if there is anything you would like to see added to the agenda.

Happy ringing,

Carol Flint

SOUTHERN NEVADA

Alison Pruett

Greetings,

We had a great time with Barb Walsh at the Director's Workshop a few weeks ago! We had eight directors who ranged from beginners to experienced handbell musicians who all learned a lot about handbell directing.

Now our focus turns to the holidays and the Las Vegas Twelfth Night Handbell Festival! Brian Childers is our guest clinician this year. Keep in mind that most of the repertoire for Twelfth Night is appropriate for church or concert performances during the holiday season. We already have folks registering for Twelfth Night. It's never too soon to get your registration in. All details of this sponsored event can be found at harmonyhandbells.com/festival. Hope to see you all there!

Nominations for Elected Board Positions

It is that time to prepare for elections. We are looking for nominations for the three elected positions: Chair (6-year-cycle), Secretary (2-year cycle), and Treasurer (2-year cycle). We need two candidates to be placed on the ballot for each position. Would you or someone you know be interested in a nomination for the ballot?

In addition, we have openings for the following appointed positions: Events Coordinator, Membership Director, Historian, and Member-at-Large.

If you are interested in or know of someone who might be interested in any of these elected or appointed positions, please contact Marci Nuoffer at pastchair.area12@handbellmusicians.org with any nominations.

Hi CenCal!

I can’t believe it’s already been a year since I joined the board! It was great to meet in person at our board meeting this September and collaborate face-to-face. We shared ideas, reflected on what’s been happening across the area, continued shaping details for next year’s conference, and much more. I left feeling inspired and grateful for the opportunity to serve our handbell community. I’ve really enjoyed my first year on the board and I look forward to making more connections with each of you! Please reach out if there’s any way I can support you.

I’ll be at these upcoming events and would love to see you there. Let me know if you can join too or have any questions.

Redding Handbell Festival, Oct. 17-18 (Redding, CA)

Twelfth Night Festival, Jan. 9-10 (Boulder City, NV)

Area 12 Conference: Neon City Rhythms, June 18-20 (Las Vegas, NV)

Don’t forget to send in photos and details of the concerts and events you had so we can share them in the Twelfth Tone! Upcoming events can also be added to our website calendar.

Howdy!

I was one of those teenagers who loved putting inspirational posters up in my room. Truth be known, I still put small inspirational posters and note cards up in my work area at home and on my bathroom mirror. I even subject Tintab to them by putting the occassional poster on my music stand facing toward them. I don't know if it inspires them, but it sure helps my focus during rehearsals! I'll share the latest one here. If you want it, email me and let me know. Or maybe it'll inspire you to make one of your own!

FALL HAPPENINGS

IN THE FAR NORTH STATE

Linda Dionne, bell director of Bella Norte Bells in Eureka, reports that her “faithful foursome” offered special music at the Humboldt & Del Norte counties church celebration of 175 years of Methodism on the North Coast of California. For ringers attending the Redding Handbell Festival be on the lookout for some fantastic Christmas ornaments made by her group from a 3-D printer. Thank you, Linda, for keeping bell music alive along the coast!!

If you are attending the Festival plan to enjoy the fall season even more by coming a day early or stay a day late and explore the world famous Sun Dial Bridge or find your way through the corn maze at Nash’s Pumpkin patch.

Happy fall ringing,

Nancy Schmitt

Teachers: Would you like the use of a three octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?

Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.

To support the development of such programs, Area 12 has six 3-octave sets of handbells and three 3-octave sets of handchimes for loan.
