The holidays are around the corner, and the Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) eagerly awaits the start of a new quarter! While our offices will continue to be physically closed, we will continue our work virtually during the Winter Quarter. We also fondly reflect upon the Fall Quarter having hosted exciting virtual lectures that were broadcast across Chicago and beyond!

CEAS is and continues to be a resource for East Asian studies
at the University of Chicago. We are only a click away to address any inquiries and/or provide important information and support!

Each year, CEAS accepts applications from UChicago undergraduate and graduate students for various grants and fellowships in Chinese, Japanese and Korean studies. These awards support language study, pre-dissertation research, professional training, and dissertation fellowships related to East Asian studies. Additionally, we offer conference travel grants to graduate students for expenses related to travel to present a paper at a conference.

CEAS maintains an extensive East Asian Film Library available to students, faculty, and staff at the University FOR FREE. The collection includes approximately 8,000 films, including historical films, documentaries, television series, and contemporary cinema from China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

In concordance with University of Chicago safety guidelines,
the CEAS Film Library collection is
however, the online film catalog is still available for users to search through the collection and is accessible by clicking HERE. Films can be borrowed and returned through a NEW appointment-based and curbside pick-up system.

CEAS hosts and sponsors a myriad of public events that reflect our mission in supporting the rigorous study of East Asia by fostering programming to enhance the understanding of China, Japan, and Korea. From lectures to workshops, conferences, film series, cultural events, performing arts, K-16 outreach, and other programs, CEAS-sponsored events are FREE and open to the public.

As we continue to adhere to University of Chicago policies and guidelines regarding COVID-19, all CEAS events being held during the Winter Quarter will be taking place VIRTUALLY.

Public Engagement—also known as outreach—is a vital part of our work. Given our considerable intellectual resources and the close ties that both Chicago and the state of Illinois have to East Asia, CEAS organizes outreach activities that extend the impact of university resources into our region and nation. The presentation of East Asian-focused content at K–16 training workshops, support for the development of new and enhanced curriculum at community colleges in the Midwest, as well as a myriad of arts, literary and cultural events geared to the general public, constitute a rich public engagement program that reaches sizeable audiences. Schools, colleges, and community organizations can call upon CEAS faculty and advanced graduate students to give presentations and lectures on a variety of topics.
