After traveling across three continents to stalk the ancient and modern story of butter,  TCS/NT member and award-winning food writer Elaine Khosrova serves up a story as rich, textured, and culturally relevant as butter itself. In conjunction with the Chatham Bookstore, Elaine will give a presentation, serve up some treats, and sign copies of her just-released book. All are welcome.

Winter Coat and Bike Drive
As the winter approaches and temperatures drop the coats will be well received by those in need.  Bicycles give those without transportation the means to get to work or to stores. 
 
Please bring your unwanted winter coats and bicycles to the lower level of the synagogue on Shabbat mornings. For more information, contact Craig Bender

Being Bar Mitzvah All Over Again

In honor of a milestone birthday, Steve Eidman will be leyning a portion of his bar mitzvah parsha, Lech-Lecha, this coming Shabbat. The Eidman's are sponsoring a kiddish and luncheon after services and look forward to the TCS/NT community joining in the celebration.

It's that time again when we gather together around the fire for good food, great company and to help local residents less fortunate than us. 

All proceeds of the evening are for the benefit of the CHATHAM SILENT FOOD PANTRY.  We will collect donations of canned goods and funds. Checks should be drawn to the Chatham Silent Food Pantry.  If you cannot attend but would like to help, checks for the food pantry can be sent to the synagogue address, Box 51, Chatham NY.  

Please contact Barbara via email to let her know what you plan to bring.  She will coordinate the evening to ensure we have a fabulous meal from soup to nuts.  We will need:  salads, vegetarian main courses, fruit, cheese and crackers, bread, drinks (beer, wine, cider), munchies.

The Chatham Synagogue Annual Meeting

During the meeting, the following items will be voted on by the Congregation: Nominated Trustees, Proposed Changes to By-laws. 

Proxy votes may be sent to the Secretary, janina.deppe@gmail.com or by mail to  the  synagogue. Indicate a yes or no vote on all items (four trustee candidates and by-laws changes).
 
Nominated Trustees
The following Trustees are subject to re-election as an officer for one year, 
Janet Carey - as Vice President 
Alan Gelb - as Secretary
 
The board of Trustees has nominated the following new Trustees each for a three year term:
Diane Eidman, Barbara Roth
 
Additional nominations may be made by  the  general membership through written petitions, each petition to be signed by five members in good standing; these additional nominations must be received by  the  Secretary of  the  Board of Trustees at least two weeks prior to  the  annual meeting. 
 
Proposed Changes to the By-laws

Learnin' Leynin':
New Synagogue Skills Course This Fall
 
Learn the ancient musical art of chanting the Torah.  TCS member Steve Eidman, a Torah-reader for 35 years, will teach you the traditional cantillation in this new course arranged by TCS's Continuing Education Committee. You'll learn to read the musical symbols, and you'll practice on the Torah portion of your choice.  Basic Hebrew skills -- knowledge of the alphabet and phonetics -- are required. Premiere One-Time Screening of  Blind Hero: The Love of Otto Weidt.  This is is a powerful docudrama of a little-known story of love, devotion, and selflessness of Otto Weidt, and his tragic love for Alice Licht as he embarks on a desperate journey to save her and her entire family from the gas chambers. The film depicts Otto Weidt's story with award-winning journalist, author, and Holocaust survivor Inge Deutschkron, providing her personal story of Weidt's efforts to save her, her mother, and the rest of his employees from the Nazis. Otto Weidt is honored by the Yad Vashem - Righteous Among the Nations.
