Q&A with Eagle Scout Henry Sawyer
Tell us about your project and inspiration.
My inspiration for designing activity carts specifically for campers with disabilities came from my family. My aunt and mom are both special education teachers, and I wanted to learn more about how to support people with disabilities. Partnering with SOAR365's Camp Baker location allowed me to work in this important professional field to design the best carts possible.
As an Eagle Scout, what did this project teach you about leadership and creating something that serves others?
This project taught me that leadership often means stepping back and empowering others rather than trying to do everything yourself. I learned more about inclusion, taking time to listen and helping everyone to work together. Presenting a common vision and accomplishing a unified goal is very rewarding.
Would you like to share anything else about your project? Anything about yourself and what you enjoy outside of scouts?
I really liked working with SOAR365 on this project! Outside of Scouts, I am a freshman in the MathSci program at Clover Hill High School and I'm working towards my career goal of becoming a physician. For fun, I enjoy being in the indoor percussion program at Clover Hill, where we are working up to get ready for championships!

Dean Browell Joins SOAR365 Board of Directors
SOAR365 is excited to welcome Dean Browell, PhD as the newest member of its Board of Directors. A longtime volunteer and advocate, Dean brings deep engagement with SOAR365’s mission, along with professional expertise in research, leadership development, and community connection that will support the organization’s continued growth and impact.
“After a decade of being a supporter, fan, and volunteer, it’s an honor to help advise and lead such a crucial and incredible organization,” Dean says. “SOAR365 is a gold standard for serving those with disabilities and their families with tremendous resources and unflinching dignity and support.”
After graduating from Randolph-Macon College, Dean earned both an MBA and a PhD, where he developed a strong interest in generational dynamics — a focus that later became central to his professional career. He went on to found Feedback, a Richmond-based consumer research firm dedicated to listening to communities, understanding decision-making behaviors, and helping organizations make more informed choices.

Volunteer Spotlight: Daren Exum Brings Smiles to Every Snapshot
Since 2024, Daren Exum has been a dedicated volunteer, generously sharing his personal photo booth services at several of our events. As a small business owner, he uses his expertise to make each event meaningful for our participants and staff.
At each event, his photo booth quickly becomes one of the most popular spots in the room. Participants love choosing props, posing with friends, and taking home printed photos to remember the day.
What makes Daren’s impact even more meaningful is his genuine enthusiasm. He takes time to connect with participants, helps them feel comfortable, and makes sure everyone has a chance to step in front of the camera. His kindness and patience help to make everyone feel celebrated and included.
"Having Daren join us at our Annual Awards Banquet and Adult Day Support Prom and Friendsgiving events makes them even more special. His excitement, kindness, and patience shines through in every photo he takes and we're so thankful for the time and energy he gives to our organization," said Liz Baker, Volunteer Engagement Director.
We are grateful for Daren’s continued support and the talent he shares with us. We are lucky to have him behind the lens!
