Driven by fentanyl, rates of fatal teen overdoses doubled in 2020


While data shows fewer teens experimented with illicit drugs, the overdose death rate among US adolescents nearly doubled from 2019 to 2020.

Drug treatment: There's an app for that too, and University of Maryland Medical Center Center Midtown has been testing it with positive results


The Center for Addiction Medicine at the UMMC Midtown Campus released a mobile app, reSET-O, for patients with opioid use disorder. Through the app patients can access cognitive behavioral therapy for guidance in shifting their thought processes and actions, counseling, and medications.

Perceived Racism and Demographic, Mental Health, and Behavioral Characteristics Among High School Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic — Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey, United States, January–June 2021


About one in three high school students in this study reported experiencing racism within their lifetime. This study calls for clear steps to promote awareness and mitigate racism in schools as a means to also help reduce negative mental health and behavioral characteristics associated with perceived racism.

Buprenorphine treatment retention and comorbidities among patients with opioid use disorder in a primary care setting


This study utilized EHR data to examine comorbidities among patients receiving buprenorphine in primary care and evaluate their relationship to treatment retention. MACS Consultant and Johns Hopkins Professor, Dr. Michael Fingerhood, is an author of this study.

Longitudinal Analysis of Substance Use Disorder Symptom Severity at Age 18 Years and Substance Use Disorder in Adulthood


In this national multicohort study of 5317 individuals followed from ages 18 to 50 years, the majority of adolescents with the most severe SUD symptoms had 2 or more SUD symptoms in adulthood.

Association of Duration of Methadone or Buprenorphine Use During Pregnancy With Risk of Nonfatal Drug Overdose Among Pregnant Persons With Opioid Use Disorder in the US


In this cohort study, a longer duration of MOUD use was associated with a meaningful reduction in overdose risk among pregnant persons with OUD.
