The Uptown Update
It's shaping up to be a busy year! Join us for our walk-a-thon, food pantry, or daily client services.
Join Us for Our Annual Fundraising
Although this year looks a little bit different than years past, we are excited to announce that we will be hosting our annual walk-a-thon on Saturday May 15th, 2021!

In the interest of keeping participants as safe as possible while adhering to local COVID-19 guidelines, we will not be hosting our usual post-walk breakfast, but we know this will still be an occasion to celebrate. We invite you to join us in this annual effort to raise funds for our most vulnerable neighbors.

Proceeds from the walk will aid Uptown's vital work in the North Park community, assisting our neighbors through providing access to food, clothing, mail, and social services.

No registration fee will be required. In lieu of a fee, we ask that you donate and, if possible, obtain sponsors to contribute to our efforts as you are able.

More information can be found here on our website.

Looking forward to seeing you there!!
Check it out! We've updated our mailing address

For all business mail and mailed monetary donations, please address to:

Post Office Box 3810
San Diego, CA 92163-3810

Thank you for assisting in our efforts to simplify our mailing system.
Thank you to the United Church of Christ of La Mesa and the Delta Kappa Gramma Educational Society.
Patty Bender and Sandy Provost have loaded their donations and are headed for Uptown (pictured, right). Patty, a member of the church and the Society, told the Society about her work at Uptown, and the decision was made to make it one of the Society's philanthropies. Patty makes up a yearly calendar for the type of donations which the church and the Society share.

This year's donations are focused on the items that have become necessary due to the pandemic, one of which has been face masks. The donations make a considerable contribution to Uptown due to the cost-savings afforded by not having to buy many essential supplies.
The Incredible Generosity of Our Clients.

On Wednesday February 17th, one of our Uptown clients came in for mail in the morning. A while later Dave Karpinski, who was managing the showers at the time, brought him to see Candace Claar because the client said he wanted to give a donation. He said that he was so grateful for the services provided by Uptown. To Candace's surprise, the client presented her with a $200.00 cash donation. Candace immediately provided him with a receipt for his generous gift. What an extraordinary act of gratitude from someone continuing to receive services at Uptown.

Uptown is an Emergency Food Assistance Pantry!
Formerly a Super Food Pantry, Uptown has now upgraded to an Emergency Food Assistance Pantry. This is a small but important shift, meaning that we are able to add an additional food distribution while still providing twice-monthly access completely for free!

This redefinition also means that we can provide clients with meat, dairy, and fresh produce. Spread the word and feel free to stop by even if you are picking up food for someone else.

Our pantry is open to the public every Monday and Friday from 3-6 pm. Be sure to check our Facebook for real-time updates.
Client Service Data: Fiscal Year 2020-2021
It's that time of year again! As we continue to venture into 2021, we reflect on the impact of our efforts in the North Park community. These numbers are not just data points, they are each indicators of life-changing milestones for the people we serve.

We are at times overwhelmed with the reality of need in our neighborhood, but we are honored to be part of the solution. We could not have done the work that we do without the support of our donors, volunteers, and deeply invested community partners.

A Word From Our Executive Director
Looking back with gratitude and moving forward with hope.
Uptown Volunteers and Supporters,

Thank you for all you have done to support Uptown during 2020. If it hadn’t been for you, we would have had to close Uptown last year due to the pandemic. And yet, you continued to support Uptown by volunteering, providing your donations, or sending your prayers or positive thoughts our way.

Because of your support, last year we were able to:

  • Become a Super Food Pantry, expanding our services to include a drive-thru food pantry for families experiencing food insecurities due to COVID19 (or for other reasons).
  • Obtain stimulus funds for our clients (due to the passionate efforts of Candace Claar).
  • Increase our food distribution to each day, and we provided a total of 46,912 services last year.

Those examples don’t describe the individuals who have survived through this pandemic in part due to the support of Uptown; people who had Thanksgiving food, sleeping bags for the cold weather, Christmas stockings, and just a little more hope because of all of you.
At the end of last year, a family member of mine was ill with cancer, and the Uptown Board of Directors supported me in taking reduced hours to support my family. Candace Claar generously agreed to become a temporary Operations Coordinator and led Uptown smoothly while I was out on leave.
Due to the generous response to our Holiday Campaign, we have the opportunity to hire a part time Operations Coordinator who will manage the daily needs of providing services to our clients, while I as the Executive Director, focus specifically on developing new partnerships, expanding our current services and outreach, and identifying and recruiting new volunteers.
These steps are in support of the Board of Director’s strategic plan for Uptown with the goal of helping unsheltered people get the support they need to get off the streets and into housing.
Once again thank you for the love and care you have provided for the clients of Uptown. On their behalf and the behalf of Uptown’s Board of Directors, thank you for your generosity and continued support.
