Achievements in Our Classrooms

Lower School:  Learning is Beary Fun

For over 20 years, 1st graders at Ursuline have celebrated Bear Week during the winter. Talk about a longstanding tradition! Over the course of the week, children participate in all things bear!
A variety of subject areas are represented as the children read and learn about fictional and real-life bears. Can you think of a better way to read than hibernating with a beary good book while in pajamas? In math, they measured their teddy bears, sorted and tallied gummy bears, and used critical thinking skills when solving story problems. Taste testing? Yes, please! What is your favorite bear food? The 1st graders chose between tuna, honey, and strawberry jam, then graphed their favorite and least favorite snacks.
The culminating project on Friday involves the students presenting their fictional bears which they created at home. During our Bear Fair, they experience public speaking, including a question and answer portion in front of peers, parents, and special friends. It's always fun to parade around to the different classes to share our bears and hear the other students say, "Oh, it's Bear Fair! I remember that!"

Middle School:  8th Grade has the Golden Ticket!

Our 8th grade students lit up the stage in a captivating adaptation of Roald Dahl's fantastical chocolate factory tale. They spent the last few weeks preparing, including full-time rehearsals last week. On both Friday and Saturday evenings they presented Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka Jr., a scrumdidilyumptious musical to full audiences.

Willy Wonka Jr. follows enigmatic candy manufacturer Willy Wonka as he stages a contest by hiding golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whomever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. The children must learn to follow Mr. Wonka's rules in the factory - or suffer the consequences.

Our students truly poured their hearts into the show. Their hard work certainly paid off. Both performances were a great success! Congratulations, to our 8th graders! Thank you to everyone who came out to support them.

Upper School:  Clubs & Classrooms

The Undefined Club hosted their first buddy day for Lower School students of color. Undefined is an affinity group for African-American and Latino students. The Upper School girls spent time bonding with younger students during a morning of coloring activities and music!
In our Honors Spanish IV classes, Sra. Ponte's lessons introduced technology and social media. Many students have accepted the challenge to change their cell phone languages to Spanish! The girls will have daily exposure to their new vocabulary as they interact with platforms in their second language during this immersive experience.
The AP Statistics students learned probability and sampling through hands-on activities. They analyzed bags of M&M's for quality control, ensuring the distribution of colors was well represented by the company. Some of the samples were off, but after enough trials, a large enough sample size, and plenty of candy later, a trend began to emerge. Did you know M&M's produces each color with different frequencies? The most popular color produced is blue with 24% of production and the least common is brown at 13%. Students also played a dice game called Tenzi to compare binomial and geometric distributions. Seeing firsthand the theories of probability and statistics in action has been a valuable experience for our students. Of course, anything that includes food is a good idea!

St. Angela Merici Days of Giving
January 27 & 28

Today is the Feast Day of Saint Angela Merici, who founded the original Ursulines in the 16th century. The Ursuline Academy Community is thrilled to initiate our first-ever "St. Angela Merici Days of Giving" which begins today, on the feast day of St. Angela Merici and runs through tomorrow, January 28th.

Join the alumnae/i, students, parents, and friends of Ursuline Academy today and tomorrow by making a gift to the St. Angela Merici Spirituality Fund. This fund helps to offset the cost of our spiritual retreats, liturgies, serviam projects, and more. A donation of any size will make an impact on our students and will help us continue to develop hundreds of faith-filled, confident leaders every year.

A very happy feast day to all Ursulines, to all students at their schools all over the world, to all alumnae and alumni of Ursuline schools, and to all friends of the Order of St. Ursula!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
Monday, January 21, 2019

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?" - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Every year in honor of MLK Day, Ursuline students, parents, and staff gather to serve together, both at school and in our community. This year tutus were made for children at local day care centers; fleece blankets were made for children and teens in the Delaware foster care system; lunches were assembled for Emmanuel Dining Room and St. Patrick's Center; dog treats were baked for hom eless dogs at Faithful Friends Animal Society; and cards were written to active-duty military men and women.

We also volunteered in our community at the following locations: St. Patrick's Center, Delaware Art Museum, Brandywine Zoo, DE Museum of Natural History, Ingleside Assisted Living, and Shipley Manor Assisted Living. It  was a wonderful day honoring the legacy Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the spirit of Serviam!

The Foundation is dedicated to helping students see their own light by providing mental health support and resources. Please follow the Foundation on  Twitter Facebook , or  Instagram  for up-to-date information about the Foundation and events.

The SL24 Foundation is building a network where individual lights come together to illuminate the solution to this national problem. The Foundation is assembling a team full of family, friends, and mental health specialists with the common goal to support students and educate our community about mental health. Since 2005, the Lockes have been proud members of the St. Mark's, Salesianum, Ursuline, and Padua families and they are honored to invite all of you to this first annual fundraising event in partnership with  BPG| SPORTS and the Delaware Mental Health Association.
