 Achievements in Our Classrooms
Lower School: Grandparents Day

On Wednesday, March 28th, students will welcome grandparents and special guests for Grandparents Day! The day consists of musical presentations, crafts, storytelling, and lots of laughter.

Our youngest students will present a slide show illustrating a typical day at school. Primary grade students will draw portraits of what they think their grandparents looked like when they were younger, while the grandparents will create portraits of what they think their grandchildren will look like when they are adults.

Other classes will incorporate the idea of service by creating Easter cards for a local assisted living residence. Our older students will interview their grandparents and guests as well as answer interview questions about themselves. The students and guests will then create a book called The Me I See in You which will be stored in the classroom library for all to see.

The students truly treasure spending time with those they love at Grandparents Day as a fun way to kick off Easter Break!
Middle School: Minimester
Our Middle School teachers have been working on an exciting new experiential learning opportunity for our girls. On Monday, March 26th and Tuesday, March 27th, the girls will participate in a two-day Minimester program of their choice. Each minimester program will be run by an Ursuline faculty member and will include guest speakers, possible off-site field trips, and a unique hands-on curriculum. The girls have six unique and exciting topics to choose from:
  • Animal Science: Feathers, Fur, and More!
  • Astronomy: To the Universe and Beyond!
  • Branding is the New Black: Defining What Makes You Unique and Flaunting Your Focus
  • CSI: Fingerprinting and Forensics
  • Oh Snap: Focus on Photography
  • Athletics: A Career Beyond the Field
Upper School: Diamond Challenge Pitch

On Friday, March 16th, Ursuline had three teams compete in the Diamond Challenge Pitch Event at Delaware Technical Community College. The event featured 21 teams from local high schools.  The Diamond Challenge, created by the University of Delaware Horn Entrepreneurship in 2012, provides a unique opportunity for teens to learn about entrepreneurship while putting their ideas into action. The Diamond Challenge offers two tracks: business concept and social venture. The three teams from Ursuline were comprised of students from the Innovation class (including a few Salesianum students) and our Entrepreneur Club. The three teams were:
  • Street Sweep (business concept): Destiny Dennis '19, Shannon O'Doherty '19, and Jassiem Lynch (from Salesianum)
  • Money Manager (social venture): Lillian Ridgely '19, Kevin Bongiorno, Ryan Connor, and Blaine Yeager (from Salesianum)
  • thrIVe (social venture): Megan Roesser '18, Maxon Blow '18, Brigid Morrissey '18, Eliza Upton '20, Hanna Richman '19, Sophia Summerill '19, and Lilliana Bifferato '19
Our teams represented Ursuline very well! Each team felt they had a viable and scaleable concept that solved a problem in today's world. This experience made their efforts worthwhile. Under Mrs. McNichol's guidance, they have learned the importance of taking chances. The more you try and accept failure, the more likely you are to reach success. The students also learned to be optimistic. Despite roadblocks, competition, and set-backs, the students kept persevering and editing their concepts. They entered the pitch event feeling confident. We are very proud of them and look forward to seeing further examples of our students unleashing their creativity, igniting their curiosity, embracing change, and sharing their passion with others.

Students Tour the Student Life Center
Education Continues Outside of the Classroom

The construction of the new Student Life Center (Fusco Hall) is making great progress! We began showing it off to students who were excited to put on a hard hat and walk through the building. Our 4th graders were chosen as the first group to take a tour to continue their learning of concepts around forces and motion. During the tour, Greg Clark, Superintendent for EDiS, illustrated how forces and motion are being used to convert the convent into the Student Life Center. The students learned how beams provide support for the floors above and even looked at beams that were hand-carved over 100 years ago! The 4th graders loved seeing where the Lower School dining room will be housed when the project is completed.

The 8th grade class also enjoyed a tour of the construction zone. They were interested in looking at the blueprints to see the future layout of the Student Life Center. Two areas that sparked excitement in the students were the large size of the art rooms on the second floor and the new atrium space being added to the first floor. One student remarked, "This building is so huge. I had no idea there was so much space in here. This is going to be awesome when it is finished!"

Global Adventures in Germany
Students Visit  Ursulinenschule Hersel
On March 18th, ten students and two faculty members began their exchange with Ursulinenschule Hersel in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.  The school has 1,100 students in grades 5-12 and sits just along the beautiful Rhine riverbank.  Over the last ten years, the Archbishop of Cologne has invested $20MM into the school and while the exterior of the structures are the originals from the mid 19th century, the interior is completely modernized and updated.
Our delegation enjoyed incredible German hospitality by their host families, many of whom were their guests when the German group visited us in October of this school year.  Since the start of the exchange, the delegation has been busy seeing the sights in the towns of Bonn, Aachen & Cologne where they are learning about major events in German history.  In Aachen, for example, they spent time on a private tour learning about Charlemagne and his legacy in the city.  In addition to immersing in history and daily life, the delegation is also immersing into German culture by trying lots of new foods, walking much more than is typical, using public transportation, and practicing German phrases for when they get to explore on their own.
The students on the delegation are: Lainey Wriggins '21, Eliza Upton '20, Katie Jones '20, Lauren Rosica '20, Jessie Falasco '19, Abby Ruzcidlo '19, Clare Shiple '19, Teddy Elliman '18, Alexis Poore '18, and Lindsay Singewald '18.  Amanda Neill and Katie McMahon are serving as the chaperones for the exchange.   Follow along with the group on the UA Global Education blog at www.uaglobaled.wordpress.com and on Twitter at @UAGlobalEd.
