Message from the Executive Director

Tony Anderson

"All Staff Meeting: Everyone Belong..."

Yesterday we had an all staff training session to review the work we’ve been doing with the University of the Pacific, Westgate Center for Leadership and Management Development. The work has been focused on implicit bias and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). For those of you following our work in this space over the past few years you’ll know we started working with Georgetown University on Cultural and Linguistic Competency in 2019 which led to the creation of our internal committee on Cultural and Linguistic Competence and later became our DEI committee. During our All Staff training last July we spent the entire day getting a deep foundational understanding of DEI issues across the entire organization.

We followed that all day session with three, two hour courses with the UOP instructors focused on practical techniques for creating an inclusive organization, what it means to be an ally for any marginalized person, and an in-depth look at implicit bias. Prior to yesterday’s session we had a homework project to further reflect on how these issues impact our workplace and the service we provide. Then yesterday morning we reviewed the DEI concepts with the instructors and discussed our review and reflections with each other in small groups. We followed the morning session with a great presentation from our new DEI Manager, Mark Crear, who is providing the next step in our journey of discovery in creating a workplace where everyone belongs and a society for our consumers where everyone belongs especially people with developmental disabilities.

An Important Message from the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities

There are 31 days in January. This year, there have been 33 mass shootings; today is January 27, 2023.

A Lunar New Year festival in Monterey Park is now added to the growing list of statewide and national events that are forever changed in the same manner as going to school, shopping, attending a religious service, or a concert.

The California State Council on Developmental Disabilities (SCDD) extends its most sincere condolences to the victims, the families, and all impacted by yet another senseless act of gun violence.

In the interim, while lawmakers share their thoughts and prayers and debate the direct or indirect causes for these violent acts, SCDD will continue to share valuable safety resources from our state and national partners geared towards people with disabilities, older adults, and others who may need help when planning for an active shooting event and other natural and human-made emergencies.
