Except for the very organized folks, I imagine most of us are in final preparation mode for Christmas celebrations. "Pop-Up Youth Ministry" to begin in 2019
Thanks to a generous gift from “angel donors,” in 2019 the diocese will launch a “Pop-Up Youth Ministry” in partnership with Cross Roads Camp and Retreat Center.

“This ministry is designed to bring youth in grades 6-12 together by region, thereby creating ‘critical mass’ in areas where churches have few high school or middle school youth,” said the Rev. Sheelagh Clarke, under whose leadership as Interim Coordinator for Youth and Young Adult Ministries the program originated. Read more.
Experienced congregational journeyers step forward to lead
After the departure of the Rev. Ginny Dinsmore and Suzanne Willian in September, the Rev. Deacon Deborah R. Drake and Merica Gellerman, both long-time participants in the Congregational Journey, have stepped forward to serve as its co-conveners. Read more.
The Rev. Sheelagh A. Clarke announces retirement
The Rev. Sheelagh A. Clarke has announced she is retiring after 13 years of ministry, effective Jan. 1, 2019. For the past 16 months she has served on diocesan staff as Interim Coordinator for Youth and Young Adult Ministries. Her last day in the office will be Dec. 20, 2018. She joined diocesan staff on Sept. 1, 2017 after serving as Rector of St. Stephen’s, Millburn. Read more.
Introducing the newest deacon in the Diocese of Newark
The Rev. Deacon Sharon Sheridan Hausman was ordained to the transitional diaconate on Saturday, December 8, 2018.

This was the first ordination at which Bishop Carlye Hughes officiated.

Sharon is currently serving at her sponsoring parish, Church of the Messiah in Chester.
McGrath gives invocation at New Jersey State Senate
At the opening of the New Jersey State Senate's voting session on Monday, December 17, 2018, the Rev. Vicki Geer McGrath, Rector of All Saints', Millington, gave the invocation at the invitation of Senator Thomas Kean, Jr., himself an Episcopalian. Here is the text of her invocation.

Tomorrow is FINAL DAY for Mission Minutes submissions!
Our 2019 Diocesan Convention is our new Bishop's first, and to help her learn more about our diverse diocese we would like to share stories from as many congregations as possible.

Therefore, each congregation is asked to submit a photo showing your congregation at its best, along with a description of what's happening in that photo. Big bonus points if the photo shows two or more congregations working together collaboratively. Photos and descriptions must be submitted no later than Tomorrow, December 20.

Episcopal House closed for Christmas & New Year's
In observance of Christmas and New Year's, Episcopal House will close at 1 PM on Monday, December 24, 2018 and will reopen on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

January publication schedule & deadlines
Due to the Episcopal House holiday closing, the diocesan e-newsletter publication schedule is shifted for January, as follows:

  • The January 2019 issue of Leadership News, which would normally be published on the last Wednesday in December, instead will be published on Wednesday, Jan. 2.
  • The two January issues of The VOICE Online will be published on the second and fourth Wednesdays, Jan. 9 and 23. The submission deadlines will be one week prior to publication, Jan. 2 and 16. (Email submissions to
  • The February issue of Leadership News published on Wednesday, Jan. 30 will include a preview of the 145th Annual Diocesan Convention being held Feb. 1 and 2, and will be sent to subscribers of both Leadership News and The VOICE Online.

Presiding Bishop named religious newsmaker of the year
The Episcopal Church has heard Presiding Bishop Michael Curry herald the message of God’s unconditional love ever since he was elected in July 2015. In May, his message went global and viral when he preached at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and now it has earned him the title of “religious newsmaker of the year.” Read more.
