President's Message from Carol Watts

June is a busy month -- Annual Meeting, State Convention, Economic Disparity and more!

Business meetings!!  Once a year, we invite all members of our League to gather for our Annual Meeting.  For the second year, it will be virtual.  We are so pleased to welcome Carol Moon Goldberg, President of LWV California to speak with us to kick off this event.  Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about how we can work with other Leagues to help make democracy work.

In addition to asking our members to vote on several important items including approving an updated position on San Jose local governance, our priorities for the next fiscal year, our budget, and leaders, we also want to hear your Directions to the Boardwhat do you think our League should do in the next year and how should we best accomplish the goals? Sign up now to attend!

The week after our Annual Meeting, the LWV California Convention is being held virtually. This is the state League’s biennial business meeting where we will approve a budget, priorities, leaders, and other business.  There are also terrific workshops and caucuses and other discussions and events. We have four delegates to this convention, but YOU can also attend. Caucuses cost nothing -- just sign up. The topics include health care, environmental justice, immigration, and civic education. If you would like to attend a workshop or any or all of the plenary sessions (the official convention which you can observe), just register for $25 and sign up for any workshops of interest to you. A workshop is produced by LWV California; a caucus is sponsored by a local League.

Our Board of Directors has approved a $500 donation to LWV California to help support the costs of this convention. We also thank Gloria Chun Hoo, our past president and current Vice President of LWV California for her service to our state League.  We are proud that she has been nominated to serve for another two years as the Vice President focusing on Action.

Do NOT miss our next Lunch with League! We are pleased to host Russell Hancock, CEO of Joint Venture Silicon Valley. Get ready to ask him questions about the economic disparity in our area. Learn more and register today.

Are you ready for in-person events? We are considering the possibility of holding our September Lunch with League with real food, safely together, in one room!!

Read below for more information about all of these events. Have a wonderful summer in our Yellow Zone!

Virtual Lunch With League

"A Tale of Two Valleys:
Economic Disparity in Silicon Valley"
Thursday, June 17, 2021, 12 noon
A Zoom Online Event

The 2021 Silicon Valley Index, published annually by Joint Venture Silicon Valley, gives proof to what we fear may be true – our region has a grotesque set of disparities.

Please join us for Lunch With League on Thursday, June 17, to hear Russell Hancock, President & CEO of Joint Venture, describe the how the dynamic economic engine of Silicon Valley is making the rich richer even as a growing number of residents experience poverty and despair.

How can we take the remarkable strength and resilience that is driving the success of our industries and apply it to improving the lives of those who are suffering because of income inequality?

REGISTER HERE for Virtual Lunch With League.

Virtual Lunch With League events are FREE and open to all members of the community. Please invite people you know to attend.

Housing and Homelessness Committee
schedules June meeting
The Housing and Homelessness Committee will convene for a virtual meeting on June 16 to discuss the City of San Jose’s proposed “Affordable Siting Policy.” If you want to attend or need more information, please contact Roma Dawson. City Council is scheduled to vote on a new siting policy – formerly referred to as the Dispersion Policy - on June 22. The Dispersion Policy encouraged the development of affordable housing throughout the City and in every Council District. It has been “paused” since 2017 as outdated and out of conformance with federal and State guidance on fair housing. LEARN MORE HERE.

A Public Conversation about Healthcare

League of Women Voters of Santa Clara County is presenting an online public conversation about "Healthcare: How Can We Bring Costs Down While Getting the Care We Need?" on Saturday, June 26, 2-4 p.m. What do you know about the U.S. healthcare system? Is a system or a jumble of uncoordinated, expensive and ineffective elements? Will the new California healthcare bill correct problems? We will have an open, civil discussion about options and tradeoffs. REGISTER HERE.

League advocacy delivers millions for homeless
Our League actively supported the passage of Measure E in 2020. The funds from a tax on real property title transfers in the City of San José were dedicated to prevention and reduction of homelessness. The current fiscal year’s revenues are appropriated for $40 million and Fiscal Year 2021-2022 projects expenditures of $45 million. Programs supported by Measure E revenues include permanent supportive and affordable rental housing for extremely low and low income and rental assistance. The Measure E campaign team credits our League’s support as an important part of its success.
