First Day of School and Matriculation

Preparing for a new school year is not simply a matter of buying supplies and tidying up the classroom. Of greater significance is the teacher's pedagogical preparation which encompasses the academic subjects he or she will teach and the cultivation of the teacher's mind and heart to the vocation. Our teachers are called not simply to convey knowledge but to set an example and guide the students' focus to all that is true, good, and beautiful.  To that end, our summer preparations included a workshop on the teaching of beauty in every academic subject. The discussion was led by Dr. Ken Calvert of Hillsdale College and Hillsdale Academy. Thank you for joining us, Dr. Calvert, and thank you to our teachers for their continued dedication to the mission of our academy.

Bed in Summer
by Robert Louis Stevenson
In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle-light.
In summer, quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day.

I have to go to bed and see
The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people's feet
Still going past me in the street.

And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day?

Sprucing up the Campus
We had a fruitful evening on Monday with dozens of volunteers helping to tidy up the school building and grounds in preparation for the new school year. Thank you to all who gave of their time and effort.  We may yet have one more work night just before the start of the year.  If you couldn't make it this week, please plan to join us another time.  It's a great way to meet other school families and accumulate service hours.
New Extracurricular Activities
This school year ushers in a number of exciting new opportunities for our students. In addition to the inception of the house system, students may participate in the Yearbook Club, Chess Club, Cicero Club (debate and forensics), tennis team, Running Club, and other activities. Most of these activities will begin in the second or third week of classes. We look forward to continuing to enrich the minds of our young scholars.
New Member of the Faculty
We are pleased to introduce to you Mr. William Sears. Mr. Sears joins us this fall to teach mathematics in the upper school (9th and 10th grades).

Mr. Sears earned his bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from Marietta College after previously spending eight years in the United States Navy and two years as a Deputy Sheriff in Golden, Colorado. He has taught astronomy and algebra, along with calculus-based physics labs at Marietta College, Washington State Community College, and West Virginia University at Parkersburg.

The teaching of mathematics continues to undergo significant changes even though the subject itself is definable and concrete. Mr. Sears is committed to teaching traditional concepts "because the education of a generation is too important to be left to an experiment, especially in mathematics," said Mr. Sears. "We are confident that Mr. Sears will build upon the great work of our lower school teachers and convey the fundamentals of higher mathematics to help our students achieve mastery of these subjects," expressed Mr. Rutherford, headmaster of the Academy.

Welcome to the VCA faculty, Mr. Sears.
Thank you for your interest in our school. Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to schedule a private meeting.
