Celebrating Black History Month
|
|
Dear Colleagues,
February is a significant month, as our campus and country commemorate the histories of African-descendant people and reflect on ways to promote greater racial equity and social justice. A variety of thought-provoking and impactful events are scheduled to take place at WashU during Black History Month. Please see below for more information about them.
Please also mark your calendars for a series of special events that will take place in March as part of our inaugural Gender Equity Month. Our month-long focus on gender equity for and among faculty will begin with a keynote presentation on March 2 by Dr. Joya Misra (University of Massachusetts-Amherst) on “Creating Equitable Universities.” Dr. Misra is a leading expert on faculty service and workload equity. Additional details and registration information for her presentation and other Gender Equity Month events are provided in this newsletter.
If you have ideas for new ways Faculty Affairs and Diversity can support faculty, please contact us. We value your input!
Warm regards,
-Kia Caldwell, vice provost for faculty affairs and diversity

Diversity is a core value at WashU Olin, and their approach to supporting it is intentional and determined. They are committed to inclusion, diversity, equity, and access as a school. In the summer of 2020, a task force was appointed to guide the school toward identifying unjust systems and practices and to offer sustainable strategies to infuse solutions throughout Olin. The IDEA team is now spearheading the effort to expand the work completed by the task force into a three-year strategic plan. Learn more about Olin’s courses and programs that support inclusion, diversity, equity, and access by visiting their website or contacting Ashley Macrander, sr. associate dean for IDEA or Jacqueline Carter, IDEA program manager.
