Summer Sunsets, Not Signs

There’s something magical about a summer road trip. The freedom of the open road, the windows rolled down, the music playing, and landscapes unfolding mile after mile—it’s an experience rooted in simplicity, beauty, and the joy of discovery.

But nothing breaks that spell faster than a wall of flashing, oversized billboards interrupting the view. Whether you’re driving along coastal highways, weaving through mountain passes, or cruising into wide-open plains, the natural and architectural beauty of America is best experienced without distraction.

Thankfully, across the country, there are stretches of road where the views are clear—where policies, planning, and thoughtful leaders have kept the clutter at bay. These places remind us just how powerful an unobstructed skyline can be. They allow travelers to connect more deeply with the landscape, to notice the colors of the sky, the rhythm of the land, and the distinct character of each place.

Board Member Spotlight

What is your favorite Houston scene?

Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, hidden gem.

What is your favorite outdoor activity?

I really enjoy pickleball, biking and exploring nature trails with my rucksack, which allows me to fully appreciate the outdoors.

Why did you want to be on the Scenic Houston Board?

I chose to serve on the Houston Scenic Board of Directors because I deeply believe in the power of nature to restore, calm, and inspire. There’s a unique joy in discovering pockets of beauty tucked within urban spaces—quiet trails, hidden parks, or a view that makes you pause. Living up north by a lake with access to nature trails, I’ve experienced firsthand how transformative these places can be. I’m passionate about helping preserve and enhance these experiences across Houston.
