Financial Planning for Retirement

Join the Men’s Group for an informative and engaging presentation led by Patrick Karpowicz, CPA who will discuss various financial topics including the role of fiduciaries when we retire and about tax law changes that impact retirement funds. The presentation will take place in the Meeting Room of the Lincoln Belmont Library; the group will then enjoy lunch at the nearby Flagship Tavern. (Although this program is hosted by the Men's Group, all are welcome to join.)

An Evening of Storytelling & Discussion with Jitesh Jaggi Presented by the Life 3.0 Committee

Join the Life 3.0 Committee for a special evening of storytelling and discussion, led by poet, storyteller, and writer, Jitesh Jaggi. Jitesh is a two-time Moth StorySlam winner, a host and producer for the podcast The Story Collider, and sought after coach, educator, and speaker. Guests will enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres upon arrival at 5:30 with the program beginning at 6. Come move your body and have fun! Work on functional/full body strength, joint mobility, posture, balance, pairing movement with breath, and core strength. Class is done standing, using a wall, and seated. Standing movements can be mimicked in a chair if needed.

Great Books, Great Conversations

This ongoing Village discussion group meets on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss a selection of short readings from an anthology published by The Great Books Foundation. In 2023, we will read the selections in “Counterparts” from the Great Books Foundation. These readings are very accessible selections by authors such as Oscar Wilde, David Sedaris, and Betty Friedan. Come join the conversation! This discussion group is now in its thirteenth year, but new members are encouraged to join! The readings are short and stimulating, the conversations are lively, and the group is very welcoming to new participants.
For January, the group will read the section on Love - selections are “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Andersen and “The Pangs of Love” by Jane Gardam.

Volunteering at the Greater Chicago Food Depository

Join Rick Stuckey, Dick Sullivan, and other Village members in volunteering for the Greater Chicago Food Depository! The GCFD needs help repacking donated food so it can go out to food pantries and soup kitchens. The work varies a great deal depending on what kind of food they are repacking. Most jobs require standing for the whole time. However, there are light duty jobs available that can be done sitting down and not lifting anything heavy. Vaccination is required, and social distancing will be enforced while working, though masks are optional. More details will be sent to those who register.

2023 Winter Memoir Writing
Mondays, six week series. January 9 - February 13, 1:30 PM - 3PM.
Location: Member Homes (addresses provided with confirmation emails)
Members–$60 & guests–$90.
We all have interesting life stories to tell. The hard part? Getting those stories down on paper. Whether you are an accomplished writer or just getting started, author, teacher, and journalist Beth Finke’s class helps you get your memoir off the ground. Students work on weekly writing assignments at home and read their work out loud in class on Mondays, making this a fun way to share stories and get to know others. Space is VERY limited for this session and Village members receive priority. If you are interested in attending, please email celebrate@thevillagechicago.org.
