"Blessing Always"

Association Minister Message

Rev. Daniel L. Busch

INCLUSION. We offer prayers for our nation this week for it was on July 4, 1776, that 13 colonies declared themselves independent from British rule. British rule lasted for 176 years until the 13 “feisty” colonies rebelled over trade and economic issues, not ideology. 13 colonies have become 50 states, including many territories now called the United States of America. It is rather amazing how diverse the population is. Divisions are sparked today wanting to exclude people rather than being open to the INCLUSION of the gifts and graces of all persons who can bring God’s creative genius into our midst. Technically we are all immigrants, including the so-called Native Americans whose ancestors crossed the Bering Strait thousands of years ago. Greed and lack of respect have caused conflict.

This Sunday’s lectionary from 2 Kings and Luke 10 reflect God’s surprise INCLUSION of those not considered part of the “religious club.” In 2 Kings, Elisha is the messenger of healing for the enemy general Naaman. In Luke 10, Jesus commissions 70 (Hebrew) or 72 (Greek) to places He was going and to nations of the world. 70/72 symbolize elders chosen by Moses as Exodus leaders, the number of the Sanhedrin (supreme council of the Jews), and the number of nations in the world in Jesus’ time.

The Rev. Walter Brueggemann died on June 5, 2025, leaving a legacy as one of the Christian Church’s boldest prophetic voice, scholar, teacher, pastor, and visionary. With gratitude to God, here are some of his prophetic words reflecting INCLUSION. In one of his final reflections, “The Strangeness of the Stranger,” he declared, “Strangeness is not a problem to be solved but a gift to be received…And every time we face the stranger, we face a new possibility of neighborliness.” He reminded us that Jesus taught a different type of economy, “…the mystery of abundance and a cruciform kind of generosity.” (from “The Liturgy of Abundance, the Myth of Scarcity: Consumerism and Religious Life.” In a collection of Brueggemann quotes, we read, “The Gospel is a very dangerous idea. We have to see how much of that dangerous idea we can perform in our own lives. There is nothing innocuous or safe about the Gospel. Jesus did not get crucified because he was a nice man.” “The church meets to imagine what our lives can be like if the gospel were true.” BLESSINGS ALWAYS.

SEARCH COMMITTEE NEWS

The Association Cabinet received and accepted on June 7, 2025, Rev. Dan Busch’s notification of his intention to retire. The Cabinet granted his request to make October 31 his last day on the job, and granted him sabbatical until the end of 2025. The Executive Committee was appointed by the Cabinet to be the Search Committee and conduct the process for finding a new Association Minister, and the committee was authorized to add several members at its discretion.

The members of the Search Committee are:

                                               Peggy George – Cabinet Moderator

Pastor Jay Scott – Cabinet Vice-moderator

Rev. Darla Metz – Cabinet Secretary

                                               Dian Ewald – Cabinet Treasurer

Doug Ricci – Cabinet Past Moderator

Rev. David Long-Higgins – Conference Minister

                                               Rev. Jeremy Mann

                                               Rev. Wendy Schindler-Chasney

The Search Committee held its first meeting on June 19 and began designing a basic process and timeline for the search and call of an Association Minister. Initial plans were also made for a Service of Release for Rev. Busch followed by a reception on Sunday afternoon, October 26 at Trinity UCC in Tiffin.

The committee will meet again on July 9 and delve into creating a profile for the position so the vacancy can be posted. Questions, and input into this process, are always welcome, and can be directed to any member of the committee.
