Practice Guideline: Beyond Entry-Level Competencies
The complexity of the health care environment requires nurses to work to their full scope of practice. This can include competencies beyond what is gained through entry-level nursing programs. These competencies are “beyond entry-level competencies” (BELCs) and are not currently part of the nurse’s work expectations. They are introduced into nursing practice in a specific practice setting. NANB has a decision-making framework that helps nurses and employers determine if a proposed intervention is consistent with the professional scope of practice. The framework should be used when evaluating requests to introduce a new BELC into your nursing practice. You can find the framework and additional information in our
Practice Guideline: Beyond Entry-Level Competencies.
Fact Sheet: Student Nurses
With the summer fast approaching, student nurses may be seeking employment in various healthcare settings. These student nurses are considered unregulated care providers, and their employer is responsible for defining their job description. NANB’s
Fact Sheet: Student Nurses and Student Nurse Employees explains the difference between the two, and provides useful tools for RNs and NPs working alongside them.
Practice Guideline: A Collaborative Approach to Assigning, Delegating and Teaching in Health Care
NANB has questions from time to time from nurses in regard to assigning, delegating and teaching when working with other nursing care providers. This guideline was created in collaboration with the Association of New Brunswick Licensed Practical Nurses. It is intended to provide guidance, instruction, and direction about assigning, delegating and teaching tasks to meet client’s needs by the correct nursing care provider.
Supporting Graduate Nurses and Graduate Nurse Practitioners
New graduate nurses (GNs) and nurse practitioners (GNPs) are entering our highly stressed health system that is facing unprecedented challenges. Practicing registered nurses (RN) and nurse practitioners (NPs) are accountable to support colleagues by sharing nursing knowledge and expertise, and by acting as role models, preceptors and/or mentors. Linked below are resources that can assist the practicing RN and NP to support transition to practice.
