Fears Have Increased
This spring, as the fears of coronavirus impacting North Texas became a reality and schools began to close, we knew this would greatly affect the children of our community.
It is no surprise that reports of child abuse are down. In addition to losing time with extended family members and trusted neighbors, children were abruptly removed from mandated reporters like teachers, camp leaders, and faith leaders who keep a watchful eye over them and are trained in recognizing signs and symptoms of child abuse.
In Collin County alone, reports of child abuse have
decreased 37%
as compared to this same time last year. This is incredibly concerning to us as the number should be even greater this year with the increase of population in our community.
We understand that this year has been challenging for so many people, but we must not lose sight of those who are suffering behind closed doors. Reports have decreased for the time being, but we know our services will be greatly needed once schools open again in the fall. The children we serve are our greatest priority and we are asking each of you to help. Check on the children you know, pay attention to the children in your neighborhood, and file a report if you suspect abuse. It is up to us as a community to protect the children of Collin County.
