July 31, 2019
This week, we enter something of a transitional period for our church, with the conclusion of the Simple Rules worship and study series and with the upcoming Asbury House garage sale this weekend.

July was filled with the enthusiastic reception of the sermon series and church-wide study on Simple Rules. If you were gone and missed all or part of this series, you can view the sermons on our First United Methodist of Longview Facebook page or on our website, www.longviewfumc.org. As God is great, we are called to be great in love for God and one another. To assist us, we are called to 1) Do No Harm, 2) Do Good, and 3) Stay in Love with God. These simple rules have their foundations in The General Rules found in our doctrinal standards (based on John Wesley's Rules for United Societies). We'd like to encourage you to engage with this series of sermons and apply them to your life in Christ.

And looking ahead to this weekend, it's sure to be filled with a plethora of items: Mirrors, books, a lawnmower, a Christmas wreath, crockpots, toys, dishes, trucks and trailers, tired bodies, dirty hands, carts, smiles, and even a few grumbles. But what do all of these things have in common? It's time for the Asbury House Garage Sale!

This week an army of volunteers has descended upon the Faith Center sorting donations and preparing them for the sale this Friday and Saturday, August 2 (from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM) and August 3 (from 8:00 AM to Noon). The funds raised from this sale help support the education and care of the children at Asbury House. Asbury House provides a nurturing environment for children and families in Longview by providing affordable preschool education. Not only are they given an excellent foundation for learning, but they also learn the love of God through chapel services and the efforts of staff and volunteers.

Music, art, birthday parties, splash day, cooperation, manners, letters, and numbers are just some of the many activities and lessons offered at Asbury House. These are just some of the ways Asbury House embodies some of the Simple Rules set forth by God, and we hope you can find a way to practice those rules by volunteering for the garage sale or by simply showing up to support this Friday and Saturday. Volunteers are still needed to sort and price donations, and shoppers are welcome this weekend. For more information, contact the church office.

This past week, our youth traveled to Belize for our international mission trip! Here is what our youth director, Janice Crane, had to say about their time abroad:
"We say see you soon but not goodbye. We love Belize and our brothers and sisters in Christ here. Thank you to Benito, Edwin, Shevan, and Glori for making our time in your country so special. We love you all and will see you again. Prayers for each of you and your families until we see each other again. Thank you to Thirst Missions, Pastor & Mrs. Marcos and Kevin, the congregation of Casa De Dios for your grace, care and hospitality. To our home church, thank you for your donations that help get us here, that made purchases of chairs and construction supplies, to our mission committee who helped with finances so we could prepare generous blessing bags to people in Belmopan and in the jungle near Armenia. The recipients were awed by the size and amount of items in these bags. They will last for many weeks if not months. Our team leader, Benito, praised our team for our work ethic, and we are humbly blessed. As they say in Caye Caulker, “Go Slow,” and I intend to do that to ensure I can listen to God and spend time in His presence. Blessings."
Sign up for Reading First!
Last year, the Reading First component of Terrific Tuesday was such a success that we have decided to extend it throughout the school year.

If you are interested in volunteering, select a date to volunteer and make a note of the theme for that date. Select a children's book that connects to that theme and, you can be as creative as you desire with the reading! The theme for September is Animals, for October is Careers, November is Thanksgiving and Fall activities, and December is Christmas!

Volunteers would need to arrive at Wesley-McCabe UMC by 4:00 PM and can expect to finish at 4:45 PM.
To sign-up, go to readingfirst.lvfumc.org If you have any questions or would like more information about Reading First, contact Romnie Scott at 903-753-4463 or at rscott@longviewfumc.org.
Laundry Day is a special day for FUMC Longview, as it allows us to provide a needed service to families, those living in shelters and on the streets, and it is a wonderful surprise for many who just happen to walk in the laundromat that day. But Laundry Day is also so much more, as it gives us a glimpse into someone else’s life. We learn names, talk about daily activities and struggles, fellowship, and take a step closer to seeing someone as a child of God.

If you would like to be a part of this special day in the Missions Ministry, contact the church office or Pastor Romnie to volunteer (903-753-4463 / rscott@longviewfumc.org).

We will conduct Laundry Day services at 2 locations:
-Zippy J's - 902 South High St.
-Quick Clean Laundry - 516 North Eastman Rd.
You can volunteer for 2 different shift times:
-1st shift - 8:00 AM - 11:30 AM
-2nd shift - 11:30 AM - 3:00 PM
