Soon kids throughout East Texas will be enjoying a week off from school with the Spring Break holiday. Many families are already making plans for vacations and other fun excursions, but for some children spring break can be a time of uncertainty, especially when it comes to meals. Far too many children face food insecurity and often they depend upon the school to provide a hot meal, but when schools are out for a holiday, their primary source for food is not available.
Longview ISD participates in the Backpack Food Program, which sends home kid friendly meals and snacks on the weekends and holidays. This year the need for this program has exceeded the budget with over 1000 students participating each week. To help meet the food insecurity needs of school children, the Missions Team authorized a $1000 donation to the Backpack Program at Longview ISD and has set up a food drive for the upcoming Spring Break Backpacks. During Spring Break, LISD will send home meals/snacks for an entire week with each student participating in the program – that’s a lot of food!
We can help by placing food donations in the containers located in the Welcome Center and office area. Items needed are pop tarts, juice boxes, snack crackers, fruit cups, chips, pudding cups, and individual soups, mac n cheese, ravioli, cereal, oatmeal, etc. All items must be nonperishable and have pop tops (no can openers or refrigeration required).
The deadline for donations is March 8th. Thank you for being a Beacon of Hope for All.
