A Message From

OSO President Melodie McGee

Greetings. . .It's a beautiful day today in our

OSO Delta Kappa Gamma Society neighborhood!

During the month of March, we sometimes experience weather filled with strong winds. The winds seem to make us move in a zigzag pattern when we are walking down a sidewalk. We feel blasting bursts of sharp cold air, blowing over our heads and on our faces too! Then when we look upward, we see squalls of blustery gusty breezes, whirling and twirling in the sky! That’s when we think about flying swirling kites. I used to enjoy taking our children to the park in an open field to fly their kites. Did you know that there are eight basic types of kites that most individuals fly? The names of these kites are called Delta, Diamond, Parafoil, Cellular, Rokkakus, Stunt and Traction Kites. Let me share with you a little bit of information about them.

  • Delta kites are shaped like a triangle with a keel holding the spine straight and rigid while a spreader,
  • Diamond kites are another popular variety of kites that are shaped like a diamond,
  • Parafoil kites do not have a frame,
  • Cellular kites are basically a full box kite with upturned wings,
  • Rokkakus kites are six-sided, shaped like vertically stretched hexagons and have a four-point bridle,
  • Stunt kites, also known as sport kites, are known for their ability to perform impressive maneuvers in the air and
  • Traction kites, also known as power kites, are large kites that are designed to provide significant pull.

S.H.I.N.E!

Let the Treasures of Delta Kappa Gamma Ohio State Organization S.H.I.N.E!

Our DKG OSO Chests are overflowing with treasures! In the future months our OSO Membership Committee will share some ideas focused around the S.H.I.N.E. acronym. Each monthly focus will help chapters show off the wondrous gifts they have to offer new members.

The N in S.H.I.N.E. stands for Nurture our DKG Sisters. Recruiting new members is important, but retaining our current members is essential to the success of our organization. We need to make all members feel valued and connected to DKG. Building strong relationships between our members will help them feel comfortable. Members who have strong bonds are more likely to take part in chapter activities. When members feel valued and appreciated for all the personal treasures, they bring to our organization they are more likely to stay active.

Spring into Action

Spring officially arrives in March. People often choose to do spring cleaning around this time of year. What type of spring cleaning could we do at the chapter level and state level to make us stronger? There are four points I would like to challenge us to act on right now.

Point One: The robustness of DKG in Ohio (OSO) is directly connected to what is happening at the chapter level. Ohio currently has 70 chapters with 2,274 active members. My challenge to all of us is to think how active we each are in OSO. There will be 2,274 different answers. Being active can take many forms depending upon our professional and personal lives. We must be willing to commit a portion of our time and energies into making sure that our chapters are actively involved. There is no way OSO can be robust without the chapters being the foundation. It starts, continues, and ends with the chapters. OSO does not exist without the chapters and its members. It is both our strength and our weakness.

Point Two: Chapters require members and without enough members chapters fail and eventually dissolve. There must be laser focus on the chapter to renew current members, recapture previous members, and recruit new members. President Melodie McGee’s theme is directly on target regarding membership. We must commit to doing every reasonable action to increase our membership. You know what you would like to see happening at your specific chapter. Have you let others know within your chapter? Are you willing to do what you need to do make productive things happen? In the Nigeran Igbo culture there is a proverb that states, “It takes a village to raise a child.”  I would put a twist on this African proverb and state, “It takes every member to keep our chapter robust.”  Leaning on a few hearty souls within our ranks to carry the load is not enough. It will require each of us to do our part to see our chapter be better and stronger.
