A Message From

OSO President Melodie McGee

Greetings. . .It's a beautiful day today in our OSO Delta Kappa Gamma Society neighborhood!

During the month of October, we watch as our seasons begin to change. The weather is changing including the temperatures that are fluctuating and the daylight hours are growing shorter. The leaves on the trees are beginning to change to an array of colors of oranges, greens, golds, reds, maroons, and sometimes even purples.

We too come in an array of colorful personalities and have many changing roles that we play as educators in our OSO chapter neighborhoods. Sometimes we change roles on the chapter branches of our OSO Tree, but as our leaves begin to change colors let’s not fall off or become disconnected. Let’s keep growing, developing, and shining in the light of the rays of our Delta Kappa Gamma Society Founders in order to have a strong, functioning OSO-DKG International Community.

Melodies’ Meaningful Memoirs…

We need to be an encouraging ray of hope for our OSO-DKG educators because…

  • Educators are 3 times more likely to report symptoms of depression than other working adults (RAND)
  •  Nearly 75% of teachers and 85% of principals report frequent stress compared to 1/3 of other adults.
  • K-12 educators are ranked as having the highest burnout levels of ANY profession - 44% compared to 30% (Gallop Workforce Survey)
  • Only 2% of teachers report their districts as offering extensive mental health supports (Merrimack)

Although the U.S. Forum does not advocate nor endorse specific candidates, considering the Mental Health resolution, passed at the 7/10/2022 U.S. Forum meeting in New Orleans, I wanted to share with you some current legislation that addresses our goals and encourage you to take action if you so choose.

HR 744 Supporting the Mental Health of Educators and Staff Act of 2023 which was referred to as the House Subcommittee on Health (from the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Education and the Workforce) in February 2023. Between February and June 2023, this bill has acquired 10 co-sponsors. However, it has not moved out of committee to the larger committee nor on to the House floor for a vote.

As you go through your day, week, and month, remember the words to this simple song that says sometimes you must encourage yourself…

“Sometimes you have to encourage yourself

Sometimes you have to speak victory during the tests

And no matter how you feel

Speak affirming words to yourself, so that you will be healed

Speak over yourself

Encourage yourself, with your own words!”

“May each of you have a bouquet of red roses in your lives every day…”

Just a Phone Call Away!

Did you know there are former members of Delta Kappa Gamma who are just waiting for an invitation to return to membership? How do we know this to be true? International has reached out to former members via a survey and many have responded letting us know they would consider returning if an invitation was extended to them. Many may have dropped because of circumstances which no longer exist. They may be at a time in their lives where DKG sisterhood would be just what they need.

The method developed by the International Membership Committee is affectionately called Annie Calling after our beloved founder, Annie Web Blanton. Annie Calling is a fun way to reach out to former members. Phone calls are placed by members to former members assuring them they are missed, telling what is happening in their chapter, in the Society and inviting them to return to membership. Annie Calling can be conducted at the discretion of the local chapter. It could be an on-going project or during a designated time frame monthly, yearly or once each biennium.

Chapters could start out by compiling a list of former chapter members with current contact information. Assign current members a set group from the list for each to telephone. Chatting with old friends is easy. An Annie Calling Map of reasonable responses to be used as a conversation aid when various excuses are offered by the former members is available on the International website. The map also includes a script of how to start the conversation. Next, invite them to attend upcoming meetings or events. Make sure they feel welcomed and valued by assigning a buddy sister to them.

We can all be courageous like Annie in her pursuit to unite key women educators with just a phone call! Let’s make it happen!
