Men's Fellowship Trip to Big Pine Lodge
As our Men's Ministry has taken shape at FUMC, Corinthians 16:13,14 keeps coming to mind. It reads, "Keep alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love" (NRSV). Many a defining event in the lives of men involves a shared challenging experience, like team sports, fraternities, military service, hunting, and fishing. For the Men's Ministry, fellowship is a starting point to where men can come together to respond to the call of Jesus - an invitation to share the challenges of service and discipleship.
Fellowship helps us discover new friends, to find out how much we have in common, and to see what we can learn from each other. Fellowship can be found in competition and in the struggle to place compassion and graciousness before pride. Other times, fellowship comes from struggling together to achieve a goal; Like how to cook 200 burgers in an hour for a bunch of hungry Methodists or a thousand pancakes in a day for hundreds of happy kids waiting to see Santa.
Fellowship draws men together and cultivates the trust necessary to open up in a study or accountability group. It also helps us to share how God has spoken to us through Scripture in a way that has changed our lives. So, fellowship is not all about fun for the sake of fun. It is the foundation for trust and friendship that can give men the courage to grow in faith and the strength to serve - all in the love of Christ.
Saturday, October 5, the Men's Ministry at First United Methodist Church Longview will be taking a boat trip from Jefferson to Big Pines Lodge near Karnack for lunch. Big Pines Lodge is known regionally as a great catfish restaurant. The boats will shove off from the Riverport boat launch in Jefferson at noon, returning to Jefferson at about 4:00 PM.
To get to Jefferson, men will have the choice of either driving themselves to the boat launch in Jefferson or taking the church bus. The church bus will leave from the Padon Street parking lot at 11:00 AM, returning to the church after the event.
We hope to see you on October 5. The boat ride will be fun, and the catfish will be delicious. And who knows, it could be the beginning of a new step in your spiritual journey with brothers in Christ. If you would like to join us on this event, head to
to sign up! If you have any questions about the trip, please don't hesitate to give me a call at the church office at 903-753-4463.
