A Message From OSO President Debby Canter

“Everything has a purpose. And that purpose has a story that goes along with it. It just depends on what your passion is. "

-- Kobe Bryant

We are making plans for our first in-person state convention since 2019 so I hope that you are making plans to join us April 14-16, 2023, at the Dublin Embassy Suites. In this issue, you will find an application for presenters at the convention. It takes a lot of OSO members to put together a meaningful convention and we need your help and expertise. Please consider sharing your time and talents with other members across the state.

I had the pleasure of attending Beta Alpha’s November meeting and sharing my passions for DKG. I have learned so much more about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Ohio this past year. You can find an enrollment flier for your use in this issue as well as on the OSO website. You may copy and distribute to preschools, Head Starts, and daycare centers. Thank you chapter co-presidents Cathy Greenleaf and Vickie Powell for also giving me the chance to talk about the OSO website.

I attended Beta Zeta's and Beta Eta’s joint birthday celebration in Ottawa, Ohio and enjoyed the hospitality and catching up with Tammy Schrader. It was so nice to have technology available to share videos from Fran DeWine, First Lady of Ohio, and Nancy Willis from Girls ROX.  Both videos can be found on the OSO website. Thanks to chapter presidents Suzanne Geis and Cynthy Kleman for a most enjoyable morning.

Please take a few minutes to complete the three question survey concerning the possibility of having a Biennial Seminar in June 2023. The link can be found in this issue.

As this year winds down, I hope you find time during this busy season to enjoy some quality time with your family and friends. Peace be with you and those you love.

Let's Share a 'Priceless Gift' with a

Delta Kappa Gamma OSO Sister

It’s that time of the year for sharing and caring for Delta Kappa Gamma Sisters in each OSO Chapter during this season of giving and receiving. This year give a ‘priceless gift’ to an OSO Chapter Sister during this December season. Here are some suggestions you might consider doing with and for that special Society sister you want to celebrate during this season.

It might be…

  • sending a letter or card that includes a memory that you shared with your chapter sister;
  • sharing a photo from a Delta Kappa Gamma Society event that you attended together;
  • giving a pin or memento from a State, Regional, or International Convention;
  • having phone calls or zoom meetings between OSO chapter sisters to rekindle kindred memories and fellowship with each other.

Fulfilling the Mission and Purpose of Delta Kappa Gamma

Ohio chapters maintain a faithful adherence to our Society Purpose, to endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to women educators from other countries.

During the last fiscal year, 19 chapters awarded 28 member scholarships totaling $6,829. Does your chapter realize the members who were awarded a scholarship are your future chapter leaders? Be sure to nominate them to a chapter, state or international position.

During the same period, 35 chapters awarded 81 project or non-member education grants totaling $34,756. These 81 non-members receiving a grant from your chapter are your future chapter members. The Membership Shuttle Challenge is on! Utilize the new member process to invite these women to become a part of your chapter.

Your chapter made an investment in leadership and new members by awarding $41,585 to members and to non-members in Ohio. It is up to our chapter leaders and members to seek a return on your investment. May your investment yields be high!

Delta Kappa Gamma is a Professional Organization

During the early years of the Society, the leaders formed a nonprofit corporation. The Internal Revenue Service received the nonprofit application and the Society Articles of Incorporation. Based on these two documents, the Society, state organizations and chapters were given nonprofit status as a professional organization, a 501(c)(6) corporation by the IRS.

The Society, state organizations, and local chapters are required to file a 990 or 990n tax return by November 15 annually. Ohio State Organization 990 tax return was filed on October 10, 2022. Ohio chapters began filing 990n on July 15. I am aware that 66 Ohio chapters have filed their chapter tax return with the IRS. Please be sure to thank your chapter treasurer for completing this important task to maintain your chapter status as a nonprofit professional organization!
