A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DEBBY CANTER

“Passion and purpose go hand in hand. When you discover your purpose, you will normally find it’s something you’re tremendously passionate about."

-Steve Pavlin

I have always felt  blessed to live in Ohio where I get to experience all the changes in the seasons. Of course, you may have to check back with me in January to see if I am still feeling the same. The older I get, the more a warmer climate appeals to me.

I was fortunate to attend Delta Kappa Chapter’s 50th Anniversary Celebration on September 11 in Kettering. Charter Members Karen Clark, JoAnn Heil, Deanna Roth, and Marilyn Slusser were the guests of honor. Each honoree received roses, a memory book and a beautiful, canvas portrait of herself. I had a wonderful time celebrating with the chapter and listening to the members share their memories.

I drove to Crooksville on September 26 to visit Gamma Sigma Chapter. The tea pot decor was adorable, the food was delicious, and most of all the members were warm and welcoming. After the OSO updates, we discussed the recent fundraiser for the Ohio Imagination Library that was hosted by the Perry County Affiliate - the Ludowici Community Foundation. The event raised over $20,000!

If you haven't already registered for the Fall Executive Board Meeting, please use the link found in this newsletter or on the website. All chapter presidents, committee chairs, and past state presidents can register at no cost. Any other OSO member may attend for the cost of lunch ($15) and this includes any chapter co-presidents.

Have you been to the Girls ROX website? If not, take some time to read about this program that we have joined as a short-term partner. OSO will pay the cost of training 18 facilitators in the state as soon as chapters can sponsor them. We only have the rest of this biennium to sponsor the training. If you would like to have someone from ROX speak to your chapter, you can contact them at 614-488-8080 and ask for Nancy Willis.

Take time to enjoy autumn's beautiful colors and everything pumpkin spice!

GIVE ME A "K" FOR THE KIDS OF OHIO!

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library of Ohio is a program that provides every Ohio child from birth to age 5 with a free, high quality, age-appropriate book each month. Through a partnership with the Dollywood Foundation, this program is free to all families in Ohio. There are no eligibility requirements, so all parents need to do is enroll their kids at www.OhioImaginationLibrary.org.

Currently, 49% of eligible kids are enrolled across the state. More than 343,000 Ohio children are currently receiving a book each month!

The goal for OSO is to raise awareness for the program and assist in enrolling more children. Donations are accepted, but not the priority. Here are a few ideas of how you can help:

  • Ask your friends who are parents or grandparents if their children/grandchildren (under the age of 5) are enrolled.
  • Reach out to a trusted community center, like a bookstore or rec center, to see if they would be willing to partner with the Ohio  Imagination Library and help promote the program.
  • Reach out to your county's affiliate and ask how you can be helpful in supporting them. Find your county's affiliate at www.OhioImaginationLibrary.org.
  • Invite your county's Imagination Library affiliate to your chapter's next meeting.
