Connections Committee
Creating a Healthy Community - Relay for Life
Relay for Life of Oxford is having a modified event this year. During the time the event committee needed to do the balk of the planning, we did not have permission to have a full traditional relay.  Now that things restrictions are changing, we are putting together a smaller event uptown, complimented by other smaller events throughout the summer. The walk will be held 6-10:30 PM on Saturday, June 19th in the uptown park.  Our church still has a team and invites all of you to participate with us.  Registration can be found at www.relayforlife.org/oxfordoh The luminaria ceremony will begin at approximately 9:30 PM.  If you are not able to join us in person, please consider donating to our team as we continue to work to find a cure for cancer. Thank you for all of your support!
Eradicating Systemic Poverty (ESP) Team
The Eradicating Systemic Poverty (ESP) team met this week and has planned several events for this summer and fall. As a vital source of information as to what is happening nationally, we urge you to join us in the on-line national assembly on June 21: The Poor People's Campaign Moral Revival and Launching a Third Reconstruction. This call will unite the poor and dispossessed against systemic racism, poverty, and ecological devastation.

Click on Third Reconstruction to register.

Note: the Third Reconstruction will address poverty and low wages from the bottom up. It is a non-partisan resolution that affects everyone.
Summer Reading Opportunity!
On behalf of OPC members, the ESP team has purchased copies of a book, available now, at no cost, for summer reading, in preparation for a late summer/early fall book discussion group that focuses on poverty and scripture. The title of the book is: Always With Us? What Jesus Really Said about the Poor by Liz Theoharis. The author is an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and one of the leaders of the Poor People's Campaign. Several of the ESP team members have read this book. Speaking for myself (Anne Bailey), I found the book to be challenging and informative, going as far back in time as the early teachings of Jesus to the era of now, when poverty and inequality face so many in a land of relative wealth.

You may pick up a copy of the book in the church office.
ALERT!    ALERT!    ALERT!
A new Bible study “Adventure” coming this summer
“THE STORY” is a novel of the Bible, but in 31 chapters rather than 66 books, that see the progression of characters as you would in any novel. And you get all the intrigue, drama and romance you would expect from any “good book.”

Since this will be your adventure as well, we’d like to know:

  1. If you as an individual/ couple/ family are interested
  2. What dates and times would work best for you this summer

A copy of this delightful and informative book is available, for your interest, in the church office and will soon be available for $5 each. You may also find this book reviewed on Amazon.com, where a hardcover currently goes for $4.93 (plus shipping and taxes).

Please contact Kay Estes at [email protected]
or 513-325-8313 ASAP with your interest and if you have any questions.
Connecting as the Beloved Community
The Bartel Family adjusted to the challenges of education during the pandemic. Amy became the coordinator of a once a week seminar discussion program, with 9th and 10th graders, at the McGuffey Montessori School, while also teaching Spanish and art. Lawrence augmented the education of the OPC congregation by holding Zoom meetings, presenting the opportunity to attend worship services in their pajamas via the internet, and keeping all advised as to the latest health guidelines. Lydia and Jens became better friends as they attended classes remotely and could empathize with each other. A well deserved trip through western U.S. National Parks is now being enjoyed by the whole family. Amy succinctly put it “We hunkered down and proceeded as usual”.

Dean and Jennifer Lake became really good cooks and farmers during the pandemic. It has been Jennifer’s most memorable year, by far, of teaching seventh graders. In her spare time she built a website for The Apple Tree, a local emporium. Emma, skilled skater, completed in several virtual synchronized skating competitions. Currently Emma is preparing a calf, a heifer and a steer for the Butler County Fair. Austin, a big city boy at heart, is living in Cincinnati and working at King’s Island. Come fall he will be studying Resort Attractions and Management at Bowling Green State University.

Savannah and Cameron Hofer, along with Emilia (8) and Eloise (4), spent five months in forced togetherness. In retrospect, Savannah realizes that it was special family time - no distractions due to everything being cancelled or closed down. Cameron teaches English at Talawanda Middle School and went from one “normal” to another “normal". Employees of Duke Energy had the opportunity to take yoga lessons under Savannah’s tutelage. These were virtual sessions, with technical difficulties sometimes adding to the challenge. Just before the pandemic hit the Hofer’s added a new Irish Setter puppy, Larkin, to their household. Perfect timing!
Prayer Shawls

Will you have time to knit a prayer shawl over the summer? Cornelia Browne will supply and deliver yarn to you. Please call (513) 524-7716.
Your Stewardship Matters
"When Jesus said to love your neighbor, a lawyer who was present asked him to clarify what he meant by neighbor...Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan,
the point of which seems to be that your neighbor is to be construed as meaning
anybody who needs you."
- Frederick Buechner

Living Into Hope

“I am writing because sometimes we are closer to the truth in our vulnerability
than in our safe certainties."
