Eradicating Systemic Poverty Takes All Forms
|
DO YOU FEEL AS IF YOU’VE BEEN COOPED UP STARING AT A COMPUTER SCREEN WITH LITTLE FRESH AIR OR EXERCISE? IF SO (OR IF NOT), HOW ABOUT EXPERIENCING A MISSION JOURNEY OUTWARD—for your mental and physical health and the well-being of those who have been experiencing homelessness?
The mission journey sponsored by our Eradicating Systemic Poverty Team involves helping rehabilitate homes damaged by the 2019 Dayton, Ohio tornadoes. Work was begun last year by the Tornado Survivors PATHWAY to Homeownership Program and will continue throughout this summer. Training is provided by the Brethren Disasters Ministries.
Already we have volunteers from OPC for Monday, July 12 through Wednesday, July 14. We invite you to join us!
Volunteers are to be 18 years of age or older, although 16 and 17-year-olds will be considered as well. The day goes from 9-4 or 5.
Anne Bailey is the bridge person (contact) for this “change of pace” experience: [email protected]

Connecting as the Beloved Community
|
Dick and Ruth Keebler have found social media to be a real help during the past year or so. It cannot replace being in the same space with family, but it has definitely been valuable. There was a “graduation that did not happen” last spring so friends and relatives got creative in celebrating at home. Going out to dinner was replaced with socializing on a deck or in a backyard. Dick and Ruth were able to go to Florida in January. The challenge was finding new restaurants to replace their old favorites, that had been closed by the pandemic.
Tom and Janet Holmes feel that the pandemic has had more impact on Grady, in his senior year at Talawanda, than it has had on them. Grady participated in three sports, all of which had their challenges. He wrestled with COVID, isolating himself in their basement. Lawrence Tech will benefit from his expertise in lacrosse, as well as his enthusiasm. Tom played golf. The Mac and Joe’s lunch group moved outside to socialize. Friendships seemed to deepen. Janet did yeoman work keeping friends posted on the Holmes’ activities via Facebook. Tom found more time to be reflective and think about the influences on his life.
Jim and Billie Maynard have returned to their Hamilton home after soaking up Florida sun during the winter. Billie has spent much time thinking about our culture. Being the Bible scholar that she is, she found her interpretation of passages changing in light of the pandemic. She found much in common with Paul’s writings. Jim has been writing an article for the next issue of the Miamian, about the 75th anniversary of NROTC on Miami’s campus.

God has given us two hands – one to receive with and the other to give with.
We are not cisterns made for hoarding; we are channels made for sharing.
