Success! NYS Legislature Passes Two Youth Justice Bills
Two critically important pieces of legislation have passed the NYS Senate and Assembly.
A.6769/S.282 allows for an individual to apply for youthful offender adjudication status after a period of five years with no new offenses, providing an easier path forward for working and living in their community.
A.4982/S.4051 will raise the lower age of delinquency jurisdiction from age 7 to 12, ending the arrest and prosecution of children under 12 as delinquents, amongst other measures to protect youth from extremely early justice system involvement.
This legislation has the potential to create dramatic positive change for New York youth. The last step is the Governor's desk. We Implore Governor Cuomo to sign these bills into law as soon as possible.

2021 Legislative Session a Huge Success for NYS Families and Youth
|
|
FTNYS is proud to announce that this year's legislative session was a resounding success. We succeeded in including family peers in the delivery of telehealth services and were integral to securing language requiring OMH to engage stakeholders in the process of determining how federal dollars will be prioritized. Outside of the budget, we actively pursued and engaged in a number of initiatives and specific bills that are too numerous to mention here. Please enjoy our session update linked below.

Dana Thorbourne of CCNY (Child Center of New York), a New York City Residential Treatment Facility, has been working extremely hard to create a safe and inclusive environment for youth. Just recently, six of these young people participated in Youth Power’s virtual New York City talent show called Pop Out! , showcasing their unique talents. Though most of them were nervous, Dana was very successful at helping them find their confidence, resulting in wins across the board! The young people of CCNY won first, second, and third places. Dana Thorbourne’s passion, dedication, and determination to prepare young people for the next stages of their lives is certainly commendable.

Paid Opportunity for Families

Ker-twang is working on two projects rooted in mental health and social services for families. To do this well, they're recruiting parents for 90-minute casual interviews and compensating them $50 for their time. These interviews are centered around getting their feedback to help them imagine and design ways to digitally communicate information effectively.
Children’s Welfare Research with NYU - This project is centered around revisiting the child welfare definition of “neglect” to be more understanding of Black & Brown cultural context, specifically for low-income families. Looking for parents who have experience with child protective services or the children’s welfare system in general.
Child Anxiety Research with Yale - This project is centered around creating digital tools to target specific parent behavior that leads to anxiety in their children. Looking for parents with middle school - highschool aged children living with mild or severe anxiety.
