Longtime Iowa legislator Sands announces retirement
Longtime state Rep. Tom Sands (R-Wapello) announced Thursday he won't run for re-election to the Iowa House. Sands has served as chair of the Iowa House Ways and Means Committee for six years and has been a strong ally for Iowa employers and employees. Sands did not have opposition in Tuesday's Republican primary and no Democrat filed paperwork to run in the district. Now, Republicans in House District 88 will hold a special nominating convention to select a candidate for the House seat. Jason Delzell of Wapello has announced his plans to seek the nomination.

Federal Spotlight: Toxic substances control act passes
On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate passed the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act by voice vote. This follows a 403-12 House vote to approve the bill in late May. The bill now heads to President Barack Obama's desk for signature.

Maximize your ABI conference experience

The 2016 Taking Care of Business Conference brings 450 to 550 Iowa business leaders from across the state together for three days. With so many attendees in a variety of industries, ages and positions within their company, the Taking Care of Business Conference will offer connections and opportunities you could never expect. Taking a few minutes on the front end to prepare will help you make the most of your three days in Sioux City.

Reach out. Check out the conference attendee list. Make a list of 5 to 10 people you'd like to meet this year. If you couldn't identify them in a crowd, ask another ABI member, ABI staff member or a Conference Committee member for an introduction. It's a nice touch to reach out ahead of time to those attendees you've known for years. Tell them you're looking forward to seeing them at conference. Keep reading...
