Greetings Comrades,
As we get further into the new VFW year, it is important to keep track of what needs to be done. While there are changes in the way we do some things in the VFW, the mission remains the same. “To foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts. To serve our veterans, the military and our communities. To advocate on behalf of all veterans.”
In order to accomplish our mission, it is important not to lose sight of our goals.
Membership is what keeps us strong, fighting for our rights as veterans. This year’s goal is 102%, and I know that we can make that happen. Remember that membership is more than recruiting, it is also important that we take care of those members in our ranks. Letting them know that #IGY6 (I got your six).
Programs like Patriots Pen, Voice of Democracy, Teacher of the Year is what helps us support the communities in which we live. Showing them support for the help they give us.
Legislative is what gives soldiers and veterans hope of a better tomorrow.
As the Dept. heads into our 94th year, we also realize we need to grow in order to stay successful, not just in membership but in denotations and sponsorship. The Dept. has formed a Fundraising Committee, and it is important that that Posts and Districts in the Department help support us in this endeavor, so that we may continue to serve veterans and the community for the next 90+ years.

Remember to put your Community Service every time you have it instead of waiting to do it weekly, monthly or quarterly. That way every detail is fresh in your mind and you won't forget anything.
Also, remember that Community Service is just that "out in the community" not something done that benefits your post.
I hope you all have a GREAT month and let's keep doing what you all do and always remember "Veterans First, Mission Always".

We have finished the first quarter of the year and everything is moving along well.
The Department is currently sitting in 8th place in the Southern Conference and 38th Nationally.
Our current stats are:
LIFE MEMBERS: 11,937

CONTINUOUS: 728
CURRENT YEAR: 12,852
PRIOR YEAR: 15,898
NEED FOR 102%: 3,364
CURRENT PERCENT: 80.84%
GROWTH: 1.60%
For the month of October we are running a special “Retention Incentive”. For every FIVE continuous or reinstated members a post has renew, they will be entered into a drawing for $300 on November 1st. The more renewals that a post has, the more entries they will receive and the better their odds are of winning. On top of that, for each district that has an increase of 125 continuous and reinstated members, they will be entered into a drawing for $200,
Retention is the key to keeping our membership numbers up – reach out to your members and keep them informed of what is going on at the Post, District, State and National levels of the organization. Keeping members informed keeps them interested. There are many ways to achieve this – the easiest is open communication. Reach out to members and ask them what the post can do better, do a wellness check – ask members how and what they are doing and feeling.
If you have any questions about recruiting, retention or incentives do not hesitate to reach out to me. I am willing to share ideas and help each of you to develop a program of your own.

Comrades
Another month has gone by. We are 1/3 the way through the year. How is your post doing? Have you completed all the tasks you needed to prior to their deadlines? Remember, these tasks are given for various reasons.
Some are to protect your hard-earned money like bonds and audits. Others are to grow a relationship with your community, like the scholarships and the awards given to teachers. Some are a form of self-advertising, and last but not least they are a way for you to keep the post alive, so we do not become a turn-key organization. All these factors overlap to help keep the post healthy. So I ask you to not think of the All American / All State requirements as a goal to reach.
I ask you to think of them as a minimum standard and grow from there. You are capable of doing so much more.

Greeting Comrades and Happy Autumn to everyone.
It was a pleasure to see the district and post representatives at the recent Counsel of Administration. It’s clearly obvious that we have wonderful things happening in our posts and districts and I am proud to be among such fine Tennesseans in our passion to serve our fellow veterans, families, and communities in which we live and call home. Please continue the great things you’re doing to enrich our programs, outreach, and support because it truly matters. The health of our comrades down to the post level directly impacts the health of the organization. Conversely, the health of our leadership team up to the National level also directly impacts the health of the members at the post level. We are a unique organization with a unique purpose and we must always uphold our commitment of “Nobody Does More for Veterans”. Until next month, God Speed to all.
The Veterans Affairs Caregiver Support Program and Homemaker Home Health Aid Program. Disabled veterans with a disability rating of 70% or higher are eligible for the VA Caregiver Support or Home Health Aid Program so long as certain requirements are met. For the Caregiver Support Program, a veteran must depend on another household member for assistance with activities of daily living. These include cooking, cleaning, putting on clothes, driving or assistance with getting in and out of a vehicle to name a few examples. Once approved, this program provides a stipend (roughly $1,200) to your loved one who is residing with you to help offset costs associated with your care. This program can also be tapped into for a disabled veteran who will be undergoing extensive surgery or chemotherapy where recovery is expected to last 6 weeks or longer (example of this would be a total knee or hip replacement). It’s a great program that not a lot of disabled veterans are aware of. The Home Health Program is a program designed for those living alone to keep you in your home verses assisted living by providing a Home Health Aid to visit your home to assist with laundry, cooking, shopping, and other activities of daily living that may be required.

It is a time for us to honor our past, express gratitude for the present, and prepare for the future. Let us delve into the essence of October and discover the profound lessons it offers.
Honoring Our Past:
October invites us to remember and honor those who have gone before us. It is a month that encompasses significant anniversaries, such as the founding of the VFW and the observance of important national holidays like Veterans Day. As VFW members, we have dedicated ourselves to preserving the memory of our fallen comrades and supporting our fellow veterans. October serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave men and women in uniform. Let us pay homage to their courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to our nation.
Expressing Gratitude in the Present:
October encourages us to appreciate the present moment and express gratitude for the blessings we have. It is a time when families come together to celebrate harvest festivals, and communities gather for fall festivities. As we gather with loved ones, let us reflect on the freedoms we enjoy and the opportunities we have been given. It is essential to express our appreciation for the camaraderie and support we find within the VFW community. Hello Comrades! This month I'm sharing an item from National General Order #2 (Sept 2023) which ties into Post Inspection Form Questions 25, 26 & 28.
GO #2, Item #7 states: All Commanders are reminded that Section 709, Manual of Procedure - Control of Units, requires that any activity, clubroom, holding company or unit sponsored, conducted or operated by, for or in behalf of a Post, County Council, District or Department shall be at all times under the direct control of such Post, County Council, District or Department and that all money, property or assets of any kind or nature, must be placed in the care and custody of the respective Quartermaster. All Commanders should ensure that all provisions of Section 709 are enforced.
Now let’s look at Post Inspection Form Questions 25, 26 & 28:
Question 25: Does the Post hold any real property? It also asks for appraised value, monthly payments, amount owed & the title holder. In legal terms, real property is immovable; this includes the land, everything that is permanently attached to it, and the rights that "run with" the land.
Question 26: Does the Post carry all proper types of insurance? Are both National & Department named as additional insured? Two types of insurance our Posts should be concerned with: Property insurance - protects against loss or damage to tangible property (a building or its contents); typically covers damage caused by fire, theft, and natural disasters. Liability insurance - protects against financial loss from legal claims made against the policyholder (Post Members).
Question 28: Does the Post operate a clubroom/canteen or other state licensed entity? A Post which operates a canteen, clubroom, kitchen, or restaurant will discover more Federal & State laws, taxes, & licenses are involved and a need for additional types of liability or insurance.
So how do they tie together & why is this important? Section 709 provides a wealth of information regarding responsibilities of Posts; what belongs to the Post; types of insurance needed if a Post owns/operates a canteen; and how a Post must act in regard to any real estate owned by that Post. Many of our Posts currently own real property (their Post Home & surrounding property) and Section 709 specifically gives caveats on how and when a Post can buy, sell, or transfer a title for any real estate, including providing written notification to the State CDR as well as the Post Members. Lastly, Section 709 plainly states that canteens/clubrooms are for Posts to "further the fraternal, patriotic, historical, charitable & educational purposes set forth by Congress." In other words, canteens are for the Members & not the general public.
Key Takeaway: Knowing where to find information and understanding how/why it affects your Post can be the difference between a struggling Post & a successful one.

We are working on new social media campaigns and expanding the TN Chess Pie Program. This year the VFW National Home has asked us to help them with Picnic Tables for the Community Center.
Flyer is below, any post, district or individual may purchase a table, which will have your name on it in the form of a plaque. So far, we have sold 3 tables, and are looking to purchase another 7. If you are interested in purchasing a table, be sure to contact me before sending money to ensure there are tables left.

Again, I want to thank the Department for letting us have this space for our newsletter.
The Grand of TN Chief of Staff Dave Rogers has two programs to help our National Home this year. First the Tennessee Pie program (a joint program between the Dept and Grand of TN). Which helps raise money to provide to the National Home Programs. And second the purchasing of picnic tables (a much need item at the National Home), Dave has sold 3 tables so far, and we are hoping to reach the goal of 10. If your post or district is interested in purchasing a table, please reach out to Dave Rogers [email protected]
Much like the VFW we also need to grow, or as they say in “Cootie talk” increase and multiply. The Military Order of the Cootie is an Honor Degree in the VFW open to all officers (elected or appointed [including chairs of programs]). If you are having a recruiting event and would like help, please do not hesitate to contact me. We would also like to get back to attending Post, District and Department events. The success of the Military Order of the Cootie derives from the success of the VFW. For the journey to the fertile hunting grounds of Grand of TN starts at the Dept of TN VFW, in other words our members are your members.
As we look for new members, we are also looking to expand our Pup Tents to make it easier for members to attend scratches, we are hoping to establish Pup Tents in every district so as to bring the great works of the M.O.C. across the State of TN.

Good Day Comrades,
The Department Auxiliary wishes to say “Happy Birthday” to you all. Thank you for your service to our Country. We wish you all the best in your service to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The Department Auxiliary just had a special visit from National President Carla Martinez. She is a dual member in the VFW and its Auxiliary. We welcomed her to the Knoxville area. She was shown some sights around the area. She visited two (2) VFW Posts. First night upon arrival was an informal meet and greet at Post 5154, Louisville where the Post and Auxiliary prepared for her evening of fun. Finger foods and games were enjoyed by all. State Representative Jerome Moon presented her with a Flag flown over the capital on September 11, 2023. This was very special. She was also presented with Proclamations from the City of Louisville and Blount County Mayors.
The next evening we visited Post/Auxiliary 5156 where she was given a very warm welcome by the members. She was greeted at the door by Auxiliary President Kim Wells and State Representative Lowell Russell, City Mayor Doyle Lowe. She was presented Proclamations from the City and Monroe County Mayors. Next Representative Lowell Russell presented her with
the State of Tennessee Colonel Aide De Camp. She was very honored by all the presentations.
The Department Auxiliary has been very busy thus far. They have been Revving up for Veterans, Past, Present, Future. We are in the process of instituting a new Auxiliary at Post 1990. Our Current membership is at 80.92%. This is great for this time of year. Our Goal is to be 100% by December 31.
Any VFW Post that wishes to start an auxiliary, please let me know. We would also like to thank VFW Post 4641 and it’s Auxiliary for a wonderful Council of Administration. It's always enjoyable after our business is completed to spend time with fellow brothers, sisters and veterans.
Thank you all for your support of the Veterans of Foreign Wars TN Auxiliary. Together, we all are “Banding together for our Veterans”.
