Winter 2023
Volunteer Highlight

Transcribe-a-thon! As part of Good Neighbor Day 2022, volunteers at Riversdale House Museum transcribed documents on loan from a descendant of Charles Benedict Calvert, the founder of the University of Maryland. Volunteers took the documents, which were difficult to read due to the format and wording, and transcribed them so that they will be accessible for everyday readers and people with disabilities.

“We were so pleased…we saw 87 documents transcribed by 17 volunteers. The information in those 19th-century documents will help the museum with its overall interpretation as we discover more about the families who lived and worked at Riversdale” shares facility director Maya Davis. The transcription ”helps bring to life the love, loss, tragedy, and triumph associated with a specific time period and uncover the names of individuals whose identities are being rediscovered.” Because of volunteers’ ongoing interest and this project’s success, the facility is planning for two more transcribe-a-thons in 2023. “It’s really helped us answer a lot of questions, correct a lot of incorrect history and it’s opened up a lot more information in regards to the enslaved community that was here,” Jennifer Flood, the collections curator at Riversdale House Museum said.
