Vol. 71 No. 10

President's Column

Aedín Clements

Moving into my second year of this co-presidency, I’m privileged to attend a lot of meetings and gatherings of League members, and I’m constantly encouraged and inspired by the work that is done.

The steady, reliable ways that we work to support democracy are very important. As our democracy is being dismantled, we are paying increasing attention to our role as an advocacy group.

You can find information on the League’s positions on social and economic justice on the positions page on the LWVKA website.

Watch for emails from the national LWV, and from LWVMI asking you to contact representatives, and see Denise Hartsough’s article on Unite and Rise 8.5, to learn more about actions we can take.

We will contact you by email as we work on events and actions that we can take over the coming months, along with requests for volunteers. Watch also our Facebook page where we highlight the League’s concerns as well as events and information from other organizations.

Thank you all for your dedication!

Voter Services Update

Aimée Bedard

In June, the League tabled at Kalamazoo Pride. The event had such great, positive energy. We connected with individuals and families of all ages. We handed out nearly all of our rainbow “I Vote” league bracelets and almost ran out of our bookmarks. The positive atmosphere at Pride energized the crowd and our volunteers. Thank you to Kimberly Bender, Aedín Clements, Moira Macleod, and Carol Pauly who assisted in table set-up, clean-up and connecting with potential voters and new league members.

Please be on the look-out for League Volunteer Blasts for upcoming volunteering opportunities including the Farmers Market and WMU Bronco Bash. I would also like to get interested members together to discuss and brainstorm around Voter Education opportunities. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all our volunteers!! You keep our League moving forward.

Unite and Rise 8.5

Denise Hartsough, VP for Program & Advocacy

Unite & Rise 8.5 aims to mobilize 8.5 million voters by Fall 2026 to rise up to defend democracy. For a public overview of the LWVUS initiative, click here.

Actions: LWVUS is crafting 90-day plans offering specific actions for local Leagues and individuals to take. The May-July 2025 plan includes:

  • Urge others to contact Congress via the LWVUS action alert about the SAVE Act, which requires unnecessary documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote.
  • Share stories on social media about individuals who would be negatively impacted by the SAVE Act.
  • Join or co-host a rally to protest illegal deportations, perhaps in front of a courthouse hearing those cases.
  • Host community conversations about the impact of immigration in your community.
  • Tell Congress to protect Medicaid—use the LWVUS action alert and urge others to use it.
  • Share stories in the media about how Medicaid cuts will affect individuals and communities.

NOTE: In these efforts, League members adhere to our non-partisan policy of never supporting nor opposing a candidate or a party.

Learning: LVWUS offers Democracy in Your Hands, a series of webinars from June to October on media literacy, voter engagement, branches of government, working with local officials, and building coalitions.

On the panel for July 23 are your LWVMI Co-Presidents, Paula Bowman and myself. See the dates, and register for the trainings here.

Court Observers Wanted!

SaConna Johnson of Kalamazoo Defender was a guest at the quarterly meeting of our Observer Corps. League members may be interested in volunteering for a project currently underway:

Court Observing: Regularly observe court proceedings over a defined period to assess the efficiency and identify areas for improvement within the judicial process. Responsibilities include analyzing how judges manage criminal cases, noting the types of charges brought by prosecutors, and documenting findings in a structured, non-biased and objective manner. The goal is to produce well-informed recommendations that contribute to ongoing discussions about court reform and can withstand judicial scrutiny.

See the Kalamazoo Defender website for information on the organization.

Please contact SaConna Johnson directly if you are interested or want to learn more about this volunteer opportunity. Sjohnson@kalamazoodefender.org.

Climate Action Committee

By Chris Kuthe

Our Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environmental Justice committee meets via zoom on the first Friday of the month at 9:00am. Please contact Chris Kuthe at ckuthe57@gmail.com if you would like to join us. We are planning a series of educational events on biodiversity.

Watch for more information in The Voter and emails.

Advocating for Solar

League member Rick Freiman described his six-year wait to get roof-top solar panels and also his experience during the first month of ownership as he recently told his Solar Story to The Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association (GLREA).

LWVMI Updates

Denise Hartsough, VP for Program & Advocacy

Many League members around the state participated in No Kings rallies on June 14 as individuals. Some local Leagues decided to participate as a League, carrying League signs and wearing League apparel. This was in communities where the rallies were deemed to focus on issues of democracy and due process and not on specific elected officials or political parties.

LWV of Leelanau County has designs for signs focused on the constitutional crisis. One of its members has offered to localize the designs should another local League wish to have some made.

LWVUS Update

By Paula Manley

July

Disability Pride Month

NNn1 26th Amendment Anniversary lowered voting age to 18

NNn4 US Independence Day

19-20 Anniversary of the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848

NN20 Anniversary of the founding of LWVKA in 1920

In May LWVUS launched the Unite and Rise 8.5 initiative which is to activate 8.5 million voters through civic engagement, education, and collective power. They now have a form which members and non-members who support the initiative can sign. Sign the form here

Recently LWVUS declared a Constitutional Crisis. The League urged the government to adhere to the Constitution and respect the First Amendment right to protest.

LWVUS responded to the US Supreme Court ruling that migrants may be deported to countries other than their country of origin without due process with the following statement: "As a pro-democracy organization, the League of Women Voters rejects this ruling. We remain steadfast in our demand for a country where all people are treated with humanity, fairness and receive due process."

Watch for LWVUS Facebook postings as events unfold.

TAKE ACTION

On July 17, 2025 the League of Women Voters is proud to once again join the John Lewis “Good Trouble Lives On” Day of Action – a national mobilization honoring the legacy of Rep John Lewis and recommitting to the fight for voting rights and democracy. The LWVUS is supporting this year’s efforts as a national partner and they are encouraging local league participation. State and local Leagues have been invited to participate in organizing or attending community-centered events. While we will not be hosting a local event, we are encouraging our members to participate in the closest event to us, Good Trouble Lives On: Paw Paw. This event will be held from 6-8pm at the Maple Lake Amphitheatre. Additional information for the Paw Paw Event can be found here:

Summary of June board meeting

The June board meeting was held at Dark Horse Brewery and provided members a time to socialize before discussing the business at hand. The importance of preparing for the 2026 election season as well as ways for members to become more involved were discussed. The Treasury report was given and a decision was made to purchase additional bracelets and bookmarks out of our general fund.

Tabling events that have taken place included: Battle Creek Cereal Festival 6/14, Juneteenth Battle Creek 6/21 and Marshall Pride Festival 6/14. Anne Flynn reported that these were well attended. The next tabling event will be Battle Creek Pridefest on July 19th.

We did not have any new members this month although several people have expressed interest in joining. A decision was made to have a gathering on July 17th that will be in place of a meeting. We discussed the possibility of having Senator Slotkin speak at our annual meeting in September. We will not be posting a VOTE411 site or recruiting observers for the board of canvassers as there are no proposals or races in Calhoun County for the August 5th election. Posting of League information and announcements will continue on social media as well as emails and text to members as appropriate.

You're Invited

Barb Dircks

It is exciting to be a part of the League — spreading the importance of what we do leads to continued success so we are planning a year of events that focus on our mission, Educating Voters and Promoting Democracy. Each month, You’re Invited to a happy hour aimed at combining fun and advocacy for the many policies we know and trust. The first get-together will be on August 26. This coincides with Women’s Equality Day! We will meet to celebrate the day with a public gathering and follow it with a happy hour! It will be an opportunity to build a calendar that becomes an action plan for the rest of 2025, too. Mark your calendars, watch for emails that showcase the exact time and place early August — and, have a great summer!

LWVKA Book Group

Aedín Clements

We look forward to discussing Percival Everett’s James on Tuesday, July 22nd. We meet at Kazoo Books on Parkview (parking in rear), socializing from 6pm and beginning our discussion at 6:30pm.

Our September selection is True Biz: A Novel, by Sara Nović

“Part tender coming-of-age story, part electrifying tale of political awakening, part heartfelt love letter to Deaf culture, True Biz is wholly a wonder.” – Celeste Ng.

That meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 16
