A busy summer . . . an even busier fall
|
What a summer! We coped with the virus by staying at home, learning how to Zoom, and learning how to protect ourselves and others by wearing masks and limiting contact with other human beings. And then came the dry lightning strikes and fires. I hope all of you and your family and friends are well.

We analyzed the issues, researched and applied our positions in order to decide whether and how we might take action. No one expected when the initial shelter-in-place public health order was issued on March 17 that half a year later we would still be in stages of lockdown. Virtual Lunch With League on Thursday, Sept. 17, will explore these unprecedented times with a presentation by Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman on the topic "Six Month Milestone: County Response to Covid-19 Pandemic."

Candidate Forums kick off Sept. 14
|
Watch State Senate District 15 candidates Dave Cortese & Ann Ravel answer your questions
The first of the League-sponsored Candidate Forums will feature Dave Cortese and Ann Ravel discussing their qualifications and perspectives on critical issues on Monday, Sept. 14, 7-8 p.m. The event will be a virtual Zoom webinar and is open to all. There is no cost, but registration is required HERE You may enter a question for candidates to answer when you register. The event is co-sponsored by three chapters of the League of Women Voters: Cupertino-Sunnyvale, San Jose/Santa Clara and Southwest Santa Clara Valley.

PROS & CONS sessions present unbiased information on ballot measures
|
The League of Women Voters makes free presentations to local community groups on statewide measures that will appear on the November ballot. These educational events are nonpartisan and do not include recommendations on how to vote.
The first public PROS & CONS event is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11, 8:30-10 a.m. for the “Get Out The Vote” program sponsored by the Dynamic Women's Council, the Business Forward Council, and the LGBTQ Society with the San Jose Capital Club. Register for this free virtual Zoom webinar HERE

No matter the political viewpoint, everyone is aware that Nov. 3 is a landmark election. Every individual who is eligible to vote needs to participate to help define the future of this region, state and nation. The League of Women Voters encourages you to make a voting plan so that you are clear and confident about how to cast your ballot.

League priorities for 2020-21 beyond Election Day
|
The the League's annual meeting in June, the Board of Directors approved the following issues as the top priorities for study and action in the coming year:
- Affordable housing and homelessness prevention
- Climate change/natural resources
- Schools & Communities First (Prop 15)
- Making democracy work (voter protection and mobilization, election reform, money in politics, redistricting, safety of mail-in ballots)
- Overcoming system racism/social injustice
- Analysis of changing mayor/manager form of government in City of San Jose

League positions on Ballot Measures
|
The League of Women Voters does take positions on some ballot measures. It never supports an individual candidate or political party. Information on which statewide and local measures will receive League support in the November election -- and why -- will be posted HERE in the coming weeks.

Key dates to remember in election season
|
Oct. 5
Vote by Mail ballots will begin to be mailed to all registered voters in Santa Clara County. You do not have
to request one. Return in free postage-paid envelope and drop off at an official ballot drop box or at any Vote Center in the county.
Oct. 5-Nov. 3
Vote by Mail and Early Voting
Oct. 19
Last day to register to vote on Nov. 3*
Oct. 31-Nov. 3
Vote Centers open
Nov. 3
Election Day
*If you miss the voter registration deadline, you have the option to do a Conditional Voter Registration at any Vote Center.

League partnership with AAPI

League of Women Voters San Jose/Santa Clara is a community partner with Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) annual Civic Leadership Summit on Saturday, Sept. 19, 10 a.m.-12 noon. Issues addressed will include fighting Asian-American hate, promoting AAPI and Black relations, educational access and affirmative action, and community mobilization for the November election.
