We are right in the middle of one of the busiest times for our organization: just before an election.
- Our Voter Service team headed by Sara Nicolson is working hard to get more and more people registered to vote.
- Sandy Mory and her volunteers are producing candidates forums so attendees can hear the candidates answer their questions and learn about the new voting procedures and the 2020 Census.
- Martha Beattie is producing Pros & Cons events on ballot issues and the expanded voting procedures and the census.

Our February speaker is Ryan Skolnick, a community organizer for the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United. He will be speaking on
Medicare for All and What It Means For You.
Ryan has worked on single-payer advocacy since 2013, vocally advocating for HR 676, the prior version of Medicare for All in the House of Representatives, and SB 562, a single-payer bill introduced in 2017 in the state of California. He also helped write Initiative 1600, a ballot measure in Washington State that would have implemented a Medicare for All-type system in the state.

The San Jose City Council will proclaim Feb. 14 as
League of
Women Voters Day.
The council will present us with a proclamation at their Feb. 11 city council meeting at 1:30 pm. Join us to accept this important recognition our organization's work over the last 100 years. Please join us when we accept this proclamation -- it will be fun! Sign up

Bay Area League Day: Looking Back, Moving Forward

Celebrate the 100
th
Anniversary of the League of Women Voters by attending League Day 2020. The day begins “looking back” with stories of extraordinary women that overcame discrimination and entrenched stereotypes to contribute to California's political history. Authors Susie and Steve Swatt will share stories from their acclaimed book,
Paving the Way: Women's Struggle for Political Equality in California.
The day honors the LWVUS request to focus on the future direction of our work.
Three panels will touch on social justice and empowerment themes which are as relevant today as in 1920.

Action Committee Update from Gloria Chun Hoo
|
Action Committee in January met and reviewed extensive reports on local governance structures in Seattle, Charlotte, NC, Austin, TX, and Portland, Oregon.
The committee also heard from two leaders in the local San Jose campaign, Ben Field and SJSU professor Garrick Percival, on the proposed Fair Elections Initiative, which is currently gathering signatures for November 2020 elections. This will be discussed further by the committee.

The March primaries are quickly approaching and the voter service team has been busy with hosting Candidate Forums, writing Pros and Cons, registering new voters, and informing the voting public on the changes to how we vote will change this year in Santa Clara county.

Census 2020 Outreach Update

On January 11th, over 30 League members from across Santa Clara County participated in the 2020 Census Ambassador Training Workshop. Ray Mueller, US Census Bureau Partner Specialist, provided an update on the 2020 Census and how League members may get involved. There are over 70 League members across our county prepared to give the Why/Who/When/How to participate in 2020 Census overview at community events. Our league was represented by Carol Watts, Sara Nicolson, Curtis Jones. Sandy Remmers, Robin Hayr, Sandy Mory and Pam Johnson. Martha Beattie also attended several trainings during the fall.
We encourage all members to become acquainted with Census material. Spread the word on social media and amongst your friends that
