The VOTER
President's Message from Carol Watts
In the last month or two, I’ve had to reach beyond my comfort zone and learn more about subjects I knew little about in order to sign letters to public officials on issues our League cares about. As you can imagine, the climate crisis and the environment often top this list.

Our League has recently written letters on the subjects of:
     “Reach Codes”
     High Speed Rail
     Green Stormwater Infrastructure

I also attended a small, productive, meeting of San Jose city staff members and some local environmental activists on the subject of reach codes before the city council voted on the issue.

Bert is the Senior Editor for the Bay Area News Group, which includes the Mercury News, East Bay Times, and a couple dozen community weeklies in the South Bay and East Bay. League of Women Voters of California-sponsored ballot initiative, has been refiled and the new version is seeking voter signatures. League members interested in why the re- filing was done, and how the measure is doing, may want to attend an informational session on Saturday, Oct. 5 between 1-3 pm in Mountain View. Engage, Educate, Inspire
September 24, National Voter Registration Day, is a relatively new holiday in our nation’s history. Established just seven years ago, the League of Women Voters has taken this opportunity to kick off a yearlong effort to engage, educate and inspire eligible citizens to:
1) register to vote
2) get the facts, and
3) VOTE at election time
This past month we had 13 teams of 2-3 people hosting voter registration tables in San Jose, Morgan Hill and Milpitas. Approximately 50-60 people registered with a

At its September meeting, members of the Action Committee heard a detailed report from Trudy LaFrance on how the cities of San Francisco and San Diego govern with a "strong mayor" and the different levels of independent power a mayor wields in different areas.
