Welcome to December!

Welcome to the holiday season where we celebrate through holiday traditions which are important to building a strong bond between family, friends and our community. Our traditions give us a sense of belonging and a way to express what is important to us. They connect us to our history and help us celebrate generations of family. The best part of the season is remembering those who make the holidays meaningful. I wish you all the love and happiness this season can bring, and may it follow you throughout the coming new year.

From the Greater Ohio Chapter, we wish you health, comfort and prosperity this holiday season. May you and your family’s holiday season be filled with beautiful moments and happy memories and that the 1-carat diamond you have been looking for is under your holiday tree this year.

I have had the pleasure of being your WICT GO president for the past two years, and I want to thank you for your continued support to our chapter which helped to make us better year-over-year. This will be my last newsletter address as president of the Greater Ohio Chapter but I want you to know that you are in safe hands with your next President Zaki’ya Black and the wonderful 2022 WICT GO board members. As immediate past-president, I will continue to be fully engaged in chapter developments/growth, events and planning.

A member of WICT since 2008, Zaki’ya has been involved with the Greater Ohio Chapter the entire time. She has served as programming chair, social media director and most recently as vice president for the chapter. Zaki’ya is excited to collaborate with her fellow board members to provide exciting and dynamic opportunities to our membership. Her goal is to continue spreading the mission of WICT Network and share the value that being a WICT member can bring.

Zaki’ya is a manager at Charter Communications. She leads a team of individuals that focus on the customers overall experience. She helps leaders lead the way in employee development, performance management, succession planning, exploring available career paths, as well as other aspects to drive results.

I would like to recognize the entire 2020/2021 WICT GO board members for their continued support and commitment to making our chapter GREAT. Over the past few years, the team has been working to achieve set goals and have exceeded all expectations. Each team member played a crucial role in the success of the WICT Greater Ohio Chapter…there was no me without them.

It has been my distinct pleasure to serve as your president for the WICT Greater Ohio Chapter and I am thankful for all of the friendships I have made during my tenure.

THE MOST WONDERFUL GINGERBREAD COOKIES

INGREDIENTS

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 1⁄2 teaspoons baking powder

3⁄4 teaspoon baking soda

1⁄4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon ground ginger

1 3⁄4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1⁄4 teaspoon ground cloves

6 tablespoons unsalted butter

3⁄4 cup dark brown sugar

1 large egg

1⁄2 cup molasses

2 teaspoons vanilla

1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest (optional)

DIRECTIONS

In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves until well blended.
In a large bowl (KitchenAid's great for this) beat butter, brown sugar, and egg on medium speed until well blended.
Add molasses, vanilla, and lemon zest and continue to mix until well blended.
Gradually stir in dry ingredients until blended and smooth.
Divide dough in half and wrap each half in plastic and let stand at room temperature for at least 2 hours or up to 8 hours.
Preheat oven to 375 deg. Prepare baking sheets by lining with parchment paper.
(Dough can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, but in this case it should be refrigerated. Return to room temp before using.) Preheat oven to 375°.
Grease or line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
Place 1 portion of the dough on a lightly floured surface.
Sprinkle flour over dough and rolling pin.
Roll dough to a scant 1/4-inch thick.
Use additional flour to avoid sticking.
Cut out cookies with desired cutter-- the ginger bread man is our favorite of course.
Space cookies 1 1/2-inches apart.
Bake 1 sheet at a time for 7-10 minutes (the lower time will give you softer cookies-- very good!).
Remove cookie sheet from oven and allow the cookies to stand until the cookies are firm enough to move to a wire rack.
After cookies are cool you may decorate them any way you like.
