Inside Look

Quarter 3 | September 2024

Dear Chapter Members,

As we step into September for the last quarter of the year, it is a perfect moment to reflect on the exciting yet challenging times ahead. For many of us, this season signifies the return of our children to school, presenting a unique opportunity to rethink and recalibrate our work-life balance. Juggling new school routines with professional responsibilities can be a daunting task, but it also offers a chance to reassess and realign our priorities.

In the dynamic world of tech, 2024 has been a year of significant transitions. Women in our industry are navigating through job changes, embracing new roles, and driving growth. It is crucial to stay resilient and adaptable as we move forward. Embrace these changes as opportunities for professional and personal development and remember that growth often comes from the most unexpected places.

As we continue to balance our many roles, let us remember to stay focused on our goals and finish the year strong. As the renowned motivational speaker Les Brown once said, "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars." Let us be present in our journey, remain steadfast in our pursuit of our goals, and never give up on the path we have chosen.

Thank you for your continued commitment and enthusiasm. Let us make the most of this season of change and growth!

Getting Kids Back-to-School

It is back-to-school season! Many working parents are facing the sometimes difficult challenge of balancing their professional responsibilities with the demands of a new school year.

This time of year can easily become overwhelming but with the right strategies and a bit of planning, you can ensure a smooth transition for both you and your children.

Here are some practical tips to help you navigate this busy time.

1. Prioritize a healthy work-life balance

A vital step in finding balance throughout this upcoming school season is creating a consistent daily routine. Set specific times for waking up, meals, homework and bedtime. Establishing a predictable schedule can make mornings less stressful for everyone. For working parents, it also means better time management and a clearer separation between work and family time.

2. Organize your workspace and your child’s

Creating an organized workspace can significantly boost productivity. Making sure your working space is tidy and free from distractions benefits your children as well. Set up a designated time and space for homework. This area should be quiet, well-lit and stocked with all the necessary supplies. An organized environment helps both you and your child stay focused and efficient.

3. Establish a routine

An essential step in a successful back-to-school transition is getting kids back into a routine. It is also helpful to establish this routine ahead of time to help make the process go smoother. For example, establishing bedtime routines will help kids with productivity. Avoiding electronics one hour before bed, eating a nutritious meal and laying out clothes for the next day all play a vital role in a successful routine.

3. Consistency is key

Now that you have your plan in place, the most vital step is consistency. Once you have set a schedule that works for you and your family, be as consistent as possible.

4. Free time is very necessary

Now that you have created a plan for a successful back-to-school season, remember when to relax. This is necessary for EVERYONE! Create some designated free time in you and your family’s weekly routine. This can also be a wonderful time to check in with your kids, loved ones, etc. How are they feeling? Are there any adjustments that need to be made?

Remember, with every plan, something can always go wrong. Make sure you have a backup plan. Having a designated family member or friend that can help with last minute emergencies is essential. Make sure you have a list of emergency contacts at your fingertips that you can share with your kids’ school and remember, it is going to be a momentous year!

Navigating Your Tech Career During the Fall Season

As the leaves change colors and students head back to school, the fall season marks a significant transition not just for students but also for professionals in various fields, including women in technology. The back-to-school season can be an opportune time to refocus, set new goals, and navigate your career path more effectively. Whether you are just starting out or looking to advance in your tech career, here are some strategies to help you thrive this season.

1. Embrace Lifelong Learning

The back-to-school season is a reminder that learning is a lifelong journey. In the fast-paced world of technology, staying updated with the latest trends, tools, and certifications is crucial. Consider enrolling in online courses or attending workshops to sharpen your skills. Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning offer a variety of courses that cater to different areas of tech, from coding and data science to project management and leadership.

If you are already employed, many companies offer professional development opportunities, so take advantage of these resources. Upskilling not only makes you more competitive but also boosts your confidence in your current role or when seeking new opportunities.

2. Re-evaluate Your Career Goals

Fall is a wonderful time to reassess your career goals. Reflect on what you have achieved so far this year and what you still want to accomplish. Are you aiming for a promotion? Considering a switch to a different area of tech? Or you are thinking about pursuing a leadership role? Whatever your goals, now is the time to create a roadmap for achieving them.

Set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals. Break down larger objectives into smaller, manageable tasks, and track your progress. Reaching out to a mentor or career coach can also provide valuable insights and guidance as you refine your goals.

3. Network with Purpose

The fall season is filled with networking opportunities, from industry conferences to local tech meetups and virtual events. Use these opportunities to expand your professional network. Networking is not just about exchanging business cards; it is about building meaningful relationships that can lead to career opportunities, collaborations, and mentorship.

Be intentional about the events you attend and the people you connect with. Prepare a brief pitch about yourself and your career aspirations, and do not be afraid to ask for advice or introductions to others in the field. Remember, networking is a two-way street, so be ready to offer support and assistance to others as well.

4. Balance Work and Personal Life

With the fall season comes the return of routines, which can sometimes lead to a hectic schedule, especially if you are juggling a demanding tech career with family or personal commitments. It is essential to find a balance that works for you. Prioritize your tasks and set boundaries to avoid burnout.

Consider implementing time management techniques like the Pomodoro Technique or time-blocking to ensure you stay productive while also being available for self-care. Remember, your well-being is just as important as your professional success.

5. Leverage Back-to-School Energy

The energy and focus that come with the back-to-school season can be contagious. Use this time to reignite your passion for your work. Revisit projects that you may have put on the back burner or start a new initiative that aligns with your career goals. The momentum of the season can help you push through challenges and achieve new milestones.

6. Mentorship and Giving Back

As you navigate your career, consider giving back by mentoring others. Mentorship is a powerful way to share your knowledge, experiences, and lessons learned. It is also an opportunity to contribute to the growth of the next generation of women in tech. Whether it is through formal mentorship programs or informal relationships, your guidance can make a significant impact on someone else’s career journey.

7. Prepare for Year-End Reviews

Fall is also a perfect time to prepare for year-end performance reviews. Start documenting your accomplishments, contributions, and any new skills you have acquired throughout the year. This preparation will not only help you articulate your value during reviews but also provide a solid foundation for discussing raises, promotions, or other career advancements.

Navigating a career in technology during the fall and back-to-school season offers unique opportunities for growth and advancement. By embracing lifelong learning, reevaluating your goals, networking with purpose, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance, you can make the most of this season and set yourself up for success in the months ahead.

As women in technology, it is important to support each other, share knowledge, and lift each other up. Together, we can break barriers, shatter glass ceilings, and pave the way for the future generation of tech leaders.

What is Labor Day?

Do you get weekends off work? Lunch breaks? Paid vacation? An eight-hour workday? Social security? If you said “yes” to any of these questions, you can thank labor unions and the U.S. labor movement for it. How did it start? On May 4, 1886, at a time when most American laborers worked 18 or even 20 hours a day, tens of thousands of workers protested in cities across the U.S. to demand an eight-hour workday. Because of this movement we celebrate Labor Day to reflect on the American worker’s contributions to our country and society.
