This Saturday, September 11, marks two decades since the tragic attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans. Each year, we honor the lives of those who were lost and the selfless service of the first responders, including those from Fairfax County, who saved countless lives that day.
|
|
Because of the heroic efforts of both the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) and the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD), both organizations were honored with a piece of the Pentagon in 2018. The piece is displayed at the museum at the Fairfax County Public Safety Headquarters and commemorates the efforts of both agencies in the aftermath of the attack.

Fairfax County to Host 20th Anniversary 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony
|
|
"Most of us can remember where we were when we first learned of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001. While it doesn't seem possible that 20 years have passed since that terrible day, for many of our professional and volunteer fire and rescue personnel and other first responders, the events of that day are forever sealed in their memories," said Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross.
Scheduled speakers for the event include Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey McKay and Supervisor Gross, as well as Fire and Rescue Chief John Butler and Police Chief Kevin Davis. The ceremony is taking place in the afternoon in order to accommodate the Pentagon's 9/11 Ceremony and morning volunteer activities at the Government Center.
The public is encouraged to view the ceremony online. It will be televised on Fairfax County Government Channel 1016 (Cox) and Channel 16 (Verizon/Comcast) and streamed online. The ceremony can also be viewed on Fairfax County's Facebook page.

Braddock Intern Spotlight
|
|
Henry Hurst is a longtime resident of Fairfax County. He attended high school at Lake Braddock Secondary School in the Braddock District. He is an active member of his community, and often volunteers in the area. Before and while working at the Braddock District Supervisor’s office, he was a lifeguard and swim instructor at a private swim club in the county.
Henry’s initial interest in interning with the County government came from his familiarity with Supervisor Walkinshaw’s campaign and goals, which he felt would be a revitalizing second wind in the County. While interning at the Supervisor’s office, he visited numerous County organizations and locations, including the I-95 Landfill Station and the McConnell Public Safety & Transportation Operations Center. He says his favorite part of working for Supervisor Walkinshaw has been meeting all of the fantastic people that help the County move day-to-day, as well as learning just how important local government is.
Henry is a freshman at American University, and he plans to major in International Studies with a minor in Arabic. He hopes to use the knowledge gained during his time at the Braddock District Supervisor’s office to better advocate for his community and country throughout his career.

Disposable Plastic Bag Tax in
Fairfax County
|
|
Enabling legislation passed in the 2020 session of the Virginia General Assembly allows Fairfax County and other counties or cities in the state to adopt an ordinance imposing a five-cent tax on disposable plastic bags provided by retailers in grocery stores, convenience stores, or drugstores within its borders. The legislation requires that the tax be collected by the retailer at the time of purchase, with revenue to be allocated toward:
• Environmental cleanup programs
• Pollution and litter mitigation programs
• Educational programs on environmental waste reduction
• Provision of reusable bags to recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) benefits
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on a proposed plastic bag tax ordinance, on September 14, 2021, at 4:30 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center. Fairfax County’s proposed ordinance tracks the enabling legislation passed in the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, as well as any guidelines to be adopted by the state Tax Commissioner. Those guidelines are being finalized now, following the release of draft guidelines in June 2021.
Members of the public are encouraged to provide testimony on the proposed ordinance at the September 14 hearing. To find out more about ways to testify, or to register to speak, visit the Department of Clerk Services’ website or call (703) 324-3151, TTY 711.
