January 15, 2021

Dear Neighbor,

Yesterday, Governor Ralph Northam announced that individuals age 65+ and individuals age 16-64 with a high-risk medical condition or disability are now part of the phase 1B vaccination group. Individuals in these groups will be eligible to register on January 18 and begin the process of scheduling a vaccine appointment.

This group, in addition to the 75+ population, accounts for approximately 40% of all Fairfax residents over the age of 16. Please note that due to limited supplies of vaccine, it may take months to get through Phase 1B. The ability to schedule appointments will depend on the supply of vaccine available and I will share additional information as it becomes available.
Important Notice:

Individuals in the Phase 1B category, who are adults age 75 and older, frontline essential workers, or one of the several included groups, are still able to schedule their vaccinations. If you are in one of these groups you do not have to wait until Monday, January 18, to schedule a vaccination.

Continue reading below for information on how to apply if you are currently eligible. Again, those who are age 65+, or age 16-64 with a high-risk medical condition or disability group will need to wait until January 18 to register:

Older Adults

For adults age 75 and older, there are two methods to schedule the vaccination:

  • Call the Health Department’s vaccine hotline at (703) 324-7404 (Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)
  • Use the online pre-screening form and vaccine appointment questionnaire

Frontline Essential Workers

Vaccine supply in the United States is still very limited and is expected to increase gradually over the next months. Because there is not sufficient supply to vaccinate everyone in Phase 1B at the same time, frontline essential workers will be vaccinated in the following order:

  1. Police, fire, and hazmat
  2. Corrections and homeless shelter workers
  3. Childcare/K-12 teachers/staff* (See message below)
  4. Food and agriculture
  5. Manufacturing
  6. Grocery store workers
  7. Public transit workers
  8. Mail carriers (USPS and private)
  9. Officials needed to maintain continuity of government.

Beginning Monday, January 11, closed vaccination clinics for police, fire and hazmat, corrections, and homeless shelter workers will be conducted by the Health Department. There will be no need for individuals working in these sectors to contact the Health Department to schedule appointments.
Dates for the other Phase 1B frontline essential worker categories will be announced in the future. More details will be available on the Health Department webpage.

*Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Staff
The vaccine will be administered to FCPS staff via Inova Health System, in partnership with the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD), starting tomorrow, Saturday, January 16, 2021. All FCPS employees will have access to the COVID-19 vaccine as a part of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) 1B group of other essential workers. All FCPS staff who wish to access the vaccine will have the opportunity to receive their first dose in the next three weeks.

FCPS has developed a COVID-19 vaccine schedule for staff. Read this update from Superintendent Brabrand for the specific FCPS Staff COVID-19 Vaccine Schedule and registration details.

Ensuring you have the most up-to-date information is my priority. I will continue to send regular updates as we navigate these quickly changing days.
Yours in service,
Supervisor James Walkinshaw

COVID-19 Vaccine FAQ List
The Fairfax County Health Department has received many vaccine–related inquiries, so below are a few of the most frequently asked questions that have been asked by Braddock District residents over the past few days.

For background, Fairfax County follows vaccine rollout guidance from the Virginia Department of Health. The county entered phase 1B on January 11. This phase is running concurrent with phase 1A.

The Health Department’s ongoing capacity to schedule registered individuals for vaccine will remain contingent on supply they receive from the state.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is it better to use the online form, call or both?
Although the online form is the preferred option, residents should use whichever method is most appropriate for them. You do not need to do both. If you have completed the online form, a Health Department representative will contact you to schedule your appointment.

I pre-registered online yesterday but did not call. Is that OK?
Yes, that is OK. The Health Department will contact you to schedule an appointment. It may take a few weeks to get through the 1B phase, but your registration is in queue and you will be contacted to schedule an appointment as vaccine supply and appointments become available.

When can someone who submitted their information online expect to receive a call?
If someone has submitted their information online, the Health Department will contact the individual to schedule an appointment. It will take a number of weeks to get through the 1B phase, but the registration is in queue and the individual will be contacted to schedule an appointment as vaccine supply and appointments become available.

How do I schedule my second appointment for the vaccine?
For individuals who are receiving the vaccination from the Health Department, you will receive an email alerting you it is time to schedule your second appointment. For individuals who receive their vaccination from clinics, you will receive information directly from your employer (for frontline essential workers) or agency (for individuals living in correctional institutions).

When will individuals in the next phase be eligible for the vaccine?
It will take several weeks to months to vaccinate Virginians who fall into Phase 1B. The ability to schedule appointments will depend on vaccine availability. *The latest information about who is currently eligible is available on the Fairfax County Health Department's website.

*The Fairfax County Health Department will begin registering individuals in age 65+, and age 16-64 with a high-risk medical condition or disability groups on Monday, January 18.
