Update on Lake Accotink

Dam Assessment

accotink___28164852185 image

The Fairfax County Park Authority began an assessment of the Lake Accotink dam earlier this fall to evaluate its structural integrity and identify any potential maintenance and/or repair needs. The assessment of the earthen portion of the dam has been completed.

The removal of the debris from the sluice gate is now scheduled for December 30, weather permitting.

Once the debris has been removed, the lake can be lowered so divers can inspect the concrete portion of the dam. If the work must be delayed because of weather conditions, the divers will not be able to return to the site until mid-February due to previous obligations during the month of January.

The Most Wonderful Time to Recycle

wrapping%20paper image

It's always a wonderful time to recycle, especially during the holidays when there are usually more recyclable materials in our homes!

Items such as glitter-free paper holiday cards, gift bags and boxes are recyclable while plastic bubble wrap, foil wrapping paper and tissue paper are NOT recyclable. Bows and ribbons and most plastic cups and utensils are not recyclable either, so try to avoid using those items.

If you have strings of holiday lights that no longer work, you can bring those to the electronics recycling center at the I-66 Transfer Station or to the I-95 Landfill Complex in Lorton. For information about other items that may or may not be recyclable, please check out the County’s Recycling Wizard!

Keep Porch Pirates at Bay

porchpirates image

As the holiday season kicks into high gear, millions of packages are shipped daily, especially after Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. With more shopping done online our homes are prime targets for porch pirates. The Fairfax County Police Department wants to help you keep your deliveries safe and secure.

Here are some tips to protect your packages:

  • Track Your Shipments
  • Sign up for delivery alerts to know exactly when your package is expected to arrive.
  • Request Safe Delivery Locations
  • Choose options like requiring a signature, delivering to a secure locker, or having a trusted neighbor pick them up if you’re not home.
  • Install Security Cameras
  • Cameras and doorbell systems can deter theft and help law enforcement identify suspects.
  • Consider a Package Drop Box
  • Lockable drop boxes provide a secure spot for deliveries.

If you become a victim of package theft, report it immediately by calling the Fairfax County Police Department’s non-emergency line at (703) 691-2131.

Take the Arts Participation Survey

Arts and culture are vital to our community.

The Fairfax County Arts Committee is seeking your views about arts and culture preferences through a survey that will help various organizations (such as ArtsFairfax) plan for and understand community needs better.

The survey will take 5-8 minutes and will inform county arts policy, resourcing and marketing efforts to assure that everyone has access to the vibrant arts scene in Fairfax County. This survey includes demographic questions, but your responses are anonymous. Read more on the County's website.
