Dear Neighbor,

July is Plastic-Free Month, a month-long challenge to reduce single-use plastic usage and incorporate more sustainable alternatives into our lives! There are many ways to cut down on single-use plastics, including:

plastic-free-july-logo-straight-lge image
  • Utilize reusable grocery bags and avoid Fairfax County's $.05 fee on plastic bags
  • Use a reusable coffee cup
  • Swap out balloons with more eco-friendly decoration options like paper lanterns, reusable bunting, DIY bubble blowers, and flowers
  • There are also federal programs to reduce plastic pollution

This month, I encourage you to swap out at least one single-use plastic item for a more sustainable solution!

Plastic Bag Fee Update

Recently, I wrote a Letter to the Editor to the Fairfax Times to correct some inaccuracies in a recent article about the County’s plastic bag fee. The article erroneously asserted that recent data demonstrate an increase in plastic bag use since the imposition of the plastic bag fee. The error was based on a misunderstanding of the ordinance and a misreading of the recent revenue reports.

In fact, since the enactment of the fee, environmental groups report seeing fewer bags in our parks, streams, and lakes.

LGBTQIA+ Resources

Regrettably, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) recently eliminated their resource page for LGBTQIA+ youth from their website – including suicide prevention and support group materials.

Fairfax County agencies continue to offer websites with a collection of resources.

VDOT Mowing

EZmJjdaXgAEnMwL image

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) began their second round of mowing in the medians this week.

VDOT owns and operates most roads in Fairfax County, and is responsible for mowing in the medians and other right-of-way areas. Their second round of mowing begins this week. Once they initiate a round of mowing, contractors have 30 days to complete their assigned region.

Recognizing that VDOT’s mowing cycle – initially planned for just three rounds – was insufficient for County needs, last year my colleagues and I funded an additional fourth round of mowing on major roads with local tax dollars. County funding for the additional cycle continues this year.

Yours in service,

Supervisor James R. Walkinshaw

Task Force on the Future of Lake Accotink Bi-Weekly Recap

The Task Force on the Future of Lake Accotink held its second meeting on July 10. This meeting focused on reviewing the information upon which the County based its recommendation to not dredge the lake. County Public Works and Environmental Services and their consultant, Arcadis, gave presentations outlining the engineering studies and research that had been undertaken with regard to dredging. Task Force members asked a number of questions and engaged in a robust discussion, which will be continued at their next meeting, to be held on Monday, July 24, at 7:00 p.m. in Conference Room 11 at the Government Center.

The biweekly meetings are open to the public and interested community members are welcome to attend to observe the task force's work or livestream the meeting on Channel 16. A recording of the 7/10 meeting is available here. Updates on the Task Force can be found here.

Fairfax Project Based Voucher Waiting List is Open for Seniors

Thumbnail-Reston-Town-Center image

The Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Association's (FCRHA) Project-Based Voucher (PBV) waiting list is open for four senior properties located throughout Fairfax County until Sunday, July 16:

  • Chesterbrook Senior (Falls Church)
  • Lake Anne House (Reston)
  • Oakwood Meadow Senior Residences (Alexandria)
  • Residences at North Hill (Alexandria)

PBV units are subsidized by funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). While residing in PBV units, residents pay a portion of the rent up to 32% of adjusted income and the County pays the remaining portion of the rent.

Applicants 62 years and older may register at Rent Café, an online housing portal, for an opportunity to be placed on waiting lists for PBV units until Sunday, July 16.

Applicants will be randomly selected to be placed on a waiting list for these properties. All applications received have an equal opportunity to be selected for the waiting lists. Once a PBV unit becomes available, the waiting list applicants will be contacted, screened, and determined eligible or ineligible for the program based upon income and household size for available units.

For those without internet access or those requiring assistance, the Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development has three workstations with internet access available Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at their office (3700 Pender Drive, Fairfax).

Applicants may also access public computers at libraries, community and senior centers to register online. For more information on the waiting list openings and registration, visit FCRHA's website or call (703) 246-5100.

  • A single travel lane will be open on Monument Drive North through 6:00 a.m. on Monday, July 17
  • The left turn to the 66 Express Lanes West will remain closed
  • Northbound drivers heading to the 66 Express Lanes West will be directed to make a U-turn at the Fair Lakes Parkway traffic signal, then stay to the right to access the westbound express lanes

  • Single travel lane will be open on Monument Drive South through 6:00 a.m. on Monday, July 17
  • The left turn to the 66 Express Lanes East will remain closed
  • Southbound drivers heading to the 66 Express Lanes East will be directed to make a U-turn at the traffic signal at Government Center Parkway, then stay to the right to access the eastbound express lanes

Automatic Real Estate Tax Payments

silver-keyboard2.jpg

Fairfax County Real Estate tax bills are mailed twice a year – for installments on July 28 and December 5.

You do not receive a bill if you have a mortgage with an escrow account; your bank pays the tax directly to the County.

The Department of Tax Administration (DTA) has noted that many residents are finishing the payment of their mortgages but have not set up automatic real estate tax payments, which may result in late payments.

DTA can assist you with setting up an automatic payment plan option including monthly, quarterly, or full lump sum annual payment. Learn more on DTA's website, or call DTA at (703) 222-8234.

FCPA Community Survey

Screen-Shot-2022-10-21-at-3 image

The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking public input on the draft Parks, Recreation, Open Space, and Access (PROSA) Strategy report summary in preparation for the completion of the PROSA Strategy later this year. PROSA will provide a roadmap for improved park access and a balance of recreational experiences.

Building on the previous public engagement, staff is seeking community feedback on the proposed concepts included in the Draft PROSA Report Summary through participation in an online survey and/or at two virtual workshops scheduled this month.

The Draft PROSA Report Summary outlines several key areas of consideration and prioritization when it comes to park development and improvement planning, including park access, habitat connectivity, park experiences and equity. The outcomes of PROSA will inform the Capital Improvement Program (CIP), land acquisition and many other decisions once completed this year.

There are a few ways to participate:

Greater DC Diaper Bank's Wipes Drive

Greater DC Diaper Bank (GDCDB), a regional nonprofit founded in 2010, is hosting its third annual Wipeout Summer campaign to collect donations of wipes from the community. GDCDB distributes diapers, baby wipes, formula, period products, and other hygiene essentials to partners throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Last year, GDCDB sent out 11 million diapers and over $500,000 worth of additional baby and adult hygiene products into the community.

This summer, the Diaper Bank is hosting its third annual Wipeout Summer campaign to raise in-kind donations of baby wipes. Beyond diapers, baby wipes are the second-most requested item for GDCDB's partners. The annual campaign helps stock warehouse shelves during a time of year when in-kind donations are typically slow, to ensure partners can continue to receive the same level of supplies year-round. Just this week the Fairfax County Supervisors Palchik, Walkinshaw, Alcorn, and Chairman McKay recognized Fairfax Diapers for distributing their one millionth diaper on June 21.

Fairfax Diapers was founded with the goal of easing the challenge of diaper insecurity, while also raising awareness of the ongoing and pressing need with the community. Currently, 47% of families with young children struggle with getting access to diapers, so their work is crucial to our community. Fairfax Diapers distributes 30,000 diapers each month with over 70% being distributed at Food for Others during food distribution.

Fairfax Diapers is a critical asset to residents; consider donating diapers or signing up to volunteer if you can.
