Fire Prevention Week and Open House

fire-prevention-week image

At Tuesday's Board meeting, we passed a resolution to recognize October 8-14 as Fire Prevention Week. This year's theme is Cooking Safety.

What can seem like a routine activity can quickly become dangerous, costly, and even deadly without following safety precautions. According to the National Fire Prevention Association, cooking is the leading cause of reported home fires and injuries, and the second leading cause of home fire deaths.

Follow these safety tips to prevent an accident in the kitchen:

  • Never leave the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food.
  • If you do have to leave, even for a short time, turn the stove off.
  • Keep anything flammable away from the stove, including:
  • Oven mitts
  • Wooden utensils
  • Food packaging
  • Towels
  • Curtains
  • If there is a fire in the kitchen, get out of the house before calling 9-1-1.

To close out Fire Prevention Week, the Burke Fire Station will hold an Open House this Saturday, October 14, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Burke Fire Station (9501 Old Burke Lake Road, Burke).

FCDOT Survey Open for Transportation Projects Considered for Funding in Braddock

Bike-and-Bike-Lane_Daniel-Oines_Flickr_h image

FCDOT has developed a proposed list of projects to receive a portion of $100 million dollars in funding allocated by the Board of Supervisors.

The Board approved this new funding for one-time investments in pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure through FY 2027. Improvements include crosswalks, sidewalks, trails, and safety features.

Now, FCDOT is asking for input from the community to help narrow down and finalize the list of 317 proposals to select the public’s most prioritized projects.

There are 36 potential projects in the Braddock District. You can read about the projects and take the survey to vote for the ones you would like to see constructed. The survey closes on October 16. Your input guides the County’s course on pedestrian and bicycle improvements in the community.

Mason Madness This Friday

Wear your green and gold, and cheer on the Patriots at Mason Madness on Friday, October 13, at 7:00 p.m. at EagleBank Arena (4500 Patriot Circle, Fairfax).

Mason fans will be introduced to the student-athletes from the men’s and women’s basketball teams and hear from new men's basketball head coach Tony Skinn, and women's basketball head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis. Each team will also participate in a scrimmage on the EagleBank Arena floor. The Green Machine pep band will perform throughout the evening. Mason Madness is FREE for all attendees, and no ticket is required. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a complimentary Mason glow stick! Learn more on GMU's website.

Partial Solar Eclipse This Weekend

An annular (ring-shaped) eclipse, also known as a "ring of fire" eclipse, will take place on October 14. The annular eclipse takes place when the moon is at its farthest point from Earth. It appears smaller than the sun and does not completely cover the sun, which results in a ring around the edge.

FCPA has prepared for extraordinary eclipse viewings throughout the County. Join experts to view the partial annular solar eclipse at one of three locations:

  • Burke Lake Park (7315 Ox Road, Fairfax Station) from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.
  • Sully Historic Site (3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly) from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.
  • Historic Huntley (6918 Harrison Lane, Alexandria) from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Enjoy games, activities and demonstrations while waiting for the eclipse and at noon, watch as the moon partially eclipses the sun as they travel across the sky. A limited number of eclipse-viewing glasses and sun-spotting scopes will be available to view the eclipse at each location. The entry fee is $10 per person at all locations. Register today to secure a spot.

Participants should bring portable chairs and blankets. Learn more or register on FCPA’s website.

Low-Cost Animal

Vaccinations and Microchips

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter will hold the next low-cost vaccination and microchip clinic for dogs and cats on Sunday, October 22.

Mason Space Day

The 2nd Annual Mason Space Day will blast off on Sunday, October 22 from 3:00 - 9:00 p.m. on George Mason University’s Fairfax Campus.

This free, family-friendly event offers an exciting and engaging opportunity to learn about the technology and science behind some of the leading aerospace projects in the area. All ages are invited to learn about the latest in space exploration from those on the front lines and explore space firsthand through a tour of Mason’s Observatory.

The Honorable Charles F. Bolden, Jr., former head of NASA and former NASA astronaut who traveled into orbit four times aboard the space shuttle between 1986 and 1994, commanding two of the missions and piloting two others, will deliver a keynote address.

Meet other event attendees, explore Mason’s Fairfax campus, and visit exhibitor organizations. Food trucks will be available onsite.

Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) Lecture

Because an active violence event can take place anywhere in the world, the community needs to be prepared with how to respond. This lecture, on Tuesday, October 24, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., will help participants learn about attackers, disaster response, and how to prepare for and respond to being trapped in a building during an active violence event.

The training will include a review of past events, the steps law enforcement will take to assist and limit casualties, and answer your questions. This training is open to anyone in the community, but some material may be disturbing.

This training will be in person at the West Springfield District Station community room (6140 Rolling Road, Springfield).

Contact MPO Tony Capizzi at (703) 277-2363 with further questions.
