Dear Neighbor,

Last Thursday evening, I was honored to join Chairman McKay, Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) Board Chair Kiel Stone, FCPA Outstanding Volunteers and County residents to recognize the 40th Anniversary of Park and Recreation Month at the Government Center Ellipse.

The County celebrates this occasion every July with the presentation of the Park and Recreation Month Proclamation to recognize the contributions of County professionals and volunteers who help keep our 421 parks healthy and welcoming for the community.

Braddock Nights @ Royal Lake: Yellow Dubmarine

Yellow Dubmarine pays tribute to the greatest Beatles songs of all time, performing the music from the "1" album in a tightly rehearsed reggae style. The album features every number-one single released by The Beatles in the United Kingdom and United States from 1962-1970.

We were also joined by staff from Neighborhood and Community Services, the Fairfax County Park Authority, Reston Community Center, and the McLean Community Center to mark the occasion.

The ceremony was capped off with a wonderful performance by Pablo Perez el Alcalde de la Salsa, as a part of the Park Authority’s free Summer Concert Entertainment Series. The Braddock District is lucky to be home to three locations for evening concertsat the Government Center Ellipse, hosted by Chairman McKay, on Thursdays, and at Royal Lake Park and Lake Accotink Park on Fridays. I hope you can join me at one of these concert locations over the summer!

Braddock Nights gets even better tomorrow night. We're very excited to welcome Bunnyman Brewing to Royal Lake Park! They'll be serving beer until 8:00 p.m. Be sure to arrive early to get a free raffle ticket for a Braddock Nights t-shirt!

Our Arts in the Parks children's series will continue every Saturday from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. at Wakefield Park in front of the Audrey Moore Rec Center (8100 Braddock Rd, Annandale) through August 16. This week’s performer is Groovy Nate!

Braddock Nights @ Lake Accotink Park: Kings Park Concert Band

The Kings Park Band was formed in 1965 with nine people, donated sheet music and a basement rehearsal room. It has grown to a full concert band with over 50 adults and a professional conductor. The dedicated volunteer members of the Kings Park Concert Band carry on the American community-band tradition in free public concerts.

In the case of bad weather, you can call the concert hotline at (571) 202-7469 (SHOW) two hours before the scheduled start time of a show for an update.

Lake Accotink Open House

This Saturday, July 19, there will be an open house to provide the community with an opportunity to learn more about the ongoing Smaller Lake Accotink Preservation Feasibility Study.

The open house will be in the cafeteria of Kings Glen Elementary School (5401 Danbury Forest Drive, Springfield) from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. and you can stop by at any time.

The Smaller Lake Accotink Preservation Feasibility Study aims to better understand the conditions within Accotink Creek and Lake Accotink, while exploring the best methods for preserving a 20 – 40-acre lake at a depth of 4 – 8 feet.

The County is working with an independent design and engineering firm to conduct the Smaller Lake Accotink Preservation Feasibility Study, which will evaluate potential smaller lake options. This study will be coordinated with and utilize results from the sedimentation rate study and the Lake Accotink dam assessment, which are currently underway by different engineering consultant teams.

View the study’s website to learn more.

wughxpnin7bwggbvyvos_4000_1000 image

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is seeking public feedback on the proposed Fiscal Year 2025-2030 Transportation Priorities Plan (TPP).

The proposed plan anticipates an estimated $3.9 billion to fund continued investment in more than 300 existing priority projects, including interchanges, road widenings, new road construction, and more. A list of proposed projects and investments is on the TPP website. Funding for the plan will be provided through a combination of sources, including federal, state, regional, local, and private funds. Specific funding streams are subject to change from project to project and throughout the plan's timeframe.

FCDOT hosted a virtual community input session on Wednesday, July 16. The draft plan, presentation (recording and slides), project lists, and public comment opportunities, are available on the Public Input website.

Additionally, public comments on the proposed plan may be submitted online via Public Input. Comments may also be submitted by telephone or by U.S. mail using the instructions provided on the site. All comments must be submitted and received by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23.

Grilling Safety Tips

July is National Grilling Month, and the Department of Code Compliance has compiled a few safety tips to help avoid fire hazards.

grilling-safety image

First, ensure you can have a grill or open-flame device at your home. Fairfax County Fire Prevention Code prohibits the use and storage of open-flame, charcoal, gas, and/or propane-fueled grills on apartment or condominium balconies. Ask your apartment or management company about any other rules that apply to grills or open-flame devices.

  • When in use, grills should be at least 15 feet away from the building.
  • Propane is a popular fuel source, but it is also a volatile hazardous material and flammable gas. Always check propane cylinders for excessive rust, pitting, or other visual defects. To avoid leaks, make sure the regulator hose connecting the grill and cylinder is free of tears, dry rot, or other damage. If in doubt, replace your cylinder or any gas accessories that show signs of wear.
  • The four numbers printed on top of the cylinder indicate the manufacture date. For example, 0717 means July of 2017. Any cylinder of 12 years of age must have a requalification sticker.
  • Along with ensuring the propane cylinder is free of visual defects and within date, it is very important that it is stored, protected, and secured upright and kept from falling.
  • Don't store fuel like charcoal and lighter fluid near your grill.

The Office of the Fire Marshal's website includes other rules and recommendations for your cookout, and Health Department food safety information is available online.

Yard Watch: Invasive Japanese Honeysuckle

The Fairfax Invasive Removal Alliance urges the community to remember that the Japanese honeysuckle is highly invasive and destructive.

Japanese honeysuckle was introduced in the US in 1806 for horticulture and erosion control. However, it has since escaped gardens to become one of the most invasive vines in the eastern and southeastern US. Japanese honeysuckle threatens trees and shrubs by growing around and eventually girdling them. It also reduces space for native ground vegetation and weakens the trees it girdles, eventually leading to disease and death. Good native alternative vines are Coral/Trumpet Honeysuckle (Lonisera simpervirens), Trumpet Creeper (Campsis radicans), or Crossvine (Bignonia capreolata).

Fairfax County will soon launch the Energy Compass program, a free local resource designed to help residents improve the comfort and energy efficiency of their homes. Starting in late summer 2025, the Energy Compass program will provide personalized technical support, information on available incentives, and connections to certified contractors.

To ensure the Fairfax Energy Compass program meets the needs of our community, the Office of Environmental and Energy Coordination invites you to fill out their survey and interest form. By completing the 5-minute survey, you can help tailor the program and secure an early consultation with the energy navigator when the program launches later this year.

Munchkin is a sweet and affectionate 10-year-old black and white female cat. This soft-hearted domestic shorthair may be a senior, but she still has plenty of love to give-and she'd love nothing more than to share cozy naps and quiet companionship with her new family! Munchkin is quiet, low-energy, and shy around strangers and loud noises, so she'd do best in a peaceful environment with gentle handling and a slow introduction. Munchkin is known for her gentle nature and cuddly personality.
