February 10, 2021

Dear Neighbor,
Last weekend, we sent a special winter weather Advisory email with resources to help you plan for the anticipated three to six inches of snow. Alas, while some snow did fall, temperatures remained too high for the forecast to materialize. But once again, there is a winter weather advisory beginning this evening and continuing through Thursday afternoon. Perhaps this time the forecast will be accurate and our resources will be helpful! Details are included below.

Yesterday, the Board of Supervisors received an update on vaccine administration and efforts to provide more information to our residents. Despite challenges interfacing with the Virginia Department of Health's systems and database, we are making progress.

Within the next two weeks -- and hopefully sooner -- the following improvements will be in place:

  • An online vaccine and registration dashboard with a range of information, including the registration date we are now scheduling appointments for and the number of doses received/administered
  • An online registration validation form for residents to confirm their registration and get a sense of where they are in line
  • An online self-cancellation form for anyone who receives a vaccine from another health care provider
  • Weekly emails to those on the waitlist to remind them that they are still registered

The supply of vaccine coming to the Fairfax County Health Department continues to be far below what we need. More than 180,000 residents remain on the waiting list, while we receive roughly 13,000 doses per week (this does not include second doses). As of the end of the day yesterday, the Fairfax County Health Department had vaccinated had administered 84,463 doses.

You can view additional vaccine data on the Virginia Department of Health's vaccine dashboard.
Yours in service,
Supervisor James Walkinshaw
COVID-19 Vaccine Updates
The Fairfax Emergency Information Blog has an update on vaccinations at CVS which are provided through the federal government. Supplies are extremely limited.

The Fairfax Health Department is partnering with a local health care practice, Trusted Doctors, which is also associated with a pediatric group, to offer COVID-19 vaccinations. The practice will provide first-dose vaccinations to a small number of individuals who had registered with the Health Department and are currently in the queue.

Three upcoming events will offer an opportunity to learn more about the vaccination process:

Winter Weather Update
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from today, Wednesday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m., until Thursday, February 11, at 10:00 a.m. Reports call for moderate precipitation of 1 - 3 inches (some frozen, some not) in the County which may change to a wintry mix and then back to snow, leading to slick conditions. 1 - 2 inches of snow may also take place Thursday Night into Friday Morning. Make sure to regularly check the weather regularly to stay updated on the forecast.

If you have not done so yet, take a look at my earlier winter resource advisory for helpful winter weather information.

I'd also like to remind everyone to please be on the lookout for icy sidewalks and walkways -- and be very careful.
Long Branch Central Watershed
Management Area Project Update
A community meeting on the Long Branch Central Watershed Management Area Project is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, February 11, at 7:00 p.m. This meeting will provide an update on the project, solicit input about the watershed condition, introduce the work plan to be developed in late spring of 2021, and introduce some of the project partners. Use this virtual meeting link to join the community meeting. (The meeting will take place over Microsoft Teams).

The Long Branch Central Watershed Management Area Project is a collaborative effort of the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, the Fairfax County Park Authority, and the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District. The project was developed because Long Branch Central was declared an impaired water area by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).

The primary goals of the project are to:

• Meet the Long Branch Central waste load reduction requirements
• Improve water quality within the Long Branch Central Watershed
• Improve habitat and environmental health

A project implementation plan is being developed as a result of the study, and community input is expected to be completed by April 2021. You can visit the Long Branch Watershed Study Public Input Map, which is a tool designed to gather local information and knowledge from watershed residents and users of the Long Branch Stream Valley Trail. Make sure to submit and share your opinion and thoughts.
