Dear Neighbor,
Quieter and Cleaner County Facilities
At this week's Board of Supervisors meeting, I joined with Chairman McKay, Supervisor Alcorn, and Supervisor Storck to introduce a measure directing County staff to plan for the phasing out of gas-powered leaf blowers on County properties. Gas-powered leaf blowers emit nearly 300 times the amount of hydrocarbons as a Ford F-150 pickup truck, and they reach noise exposure levels that can cause hearing damage and/or tinnitus, even for those 50 feet away.
By transitioning to modern electric landscaping equipment, Fairfax County facilities will be quieter, cleaner, and safer for our residents to enjoy! Read my full statement.

Senior Tax Relief Update
The Board also authorized a public hearing on Tuesday, December 7, to consider expanding the real estate tax relief program for seniors and people with disabilities by raising the income/net worth threshold levels, adding a new 75% tax relief bracket, and offering a new option to defer property tax payments. Increasing the net worth threshold will allow more retirees with 401ks and other retirement accounts to participate in the relief program. The senior tax relief program was last updated in 2006.
I have been a strong advocate for the deferral program because it is a win-win. It will help seniors living on a fixed income to age in place right here in Fairfax, and the county will recoup the full tax owed -- plus modest interest -- when the property is sold or transferred.

Now is the Time to Get Vaccinated
In November’s Braddock Beacon Newsletter, I shared information on ways children ages 5-11 can get vaccinated. With the holidays around the corner, now is a great time for all eligible people to get vaccinated or get a booster. At the moment, appointments are required for all vaccinations at County locations, and:
- children ages 5-11 are eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccine
- individuals who received the COVID-19 vaccine made by Johnson & Johnson should get a single booster shot two months or more after receiving the initial vaccination for all persons 18 years of age and older
- for individuals who received a COVID-19 vaccine made by Pfizer or Moderna, the following groups are now eligible for a single booster shot at six months or more after completing their initial series:

November is National Family
Caregivers Month
|
|
In November, Fairfax County recognizes the critical role of family caregivers as partners in care and acknowledges the importance of providing services to support caregivers of older adults & adults with disabilities during a time that can be complicated and stressful. This year’s theme is “Caregiving Around the Clock.”
- Family caregiving spans across all generations and includes parents, adult children, siblings, partners, spouses, friends, and neighbors who provide care for a loved one.
- Caregivers manage a wide range of responsibilities, from household tasks to assisting with personal care, from helping with legal and financial matters to assisting with medical and nursing tasks often with little to no training.
- An estimated 53 million adults in the United States have provided care to a loved one within the past 12 months.
- In Virginia, 1 in 5 is a family caregiver.
- In Fairfax County, 59 percent of older residents provides unpaid care at home for a chronically ill, disabled, or aging loved one.
The Fairfax County Department of Family Services, honors family caregivers for their dedication, commitment, and compassionate care to their loved ones. Our Fairfax Area Agency on Aging, specializing in caring for older adults and adults with disabilities, provides caregivers with evidence-based programs, educational webinars, workshops, as well as resources and services focused on caregivers’ needs.
