In one of the most anticipated concerts of the season, Walt Michael & Co. share their wide-ranging repertoire of tunes and songs reflecting the rich musical heritage of the Appalachians. Walt Michael is joined by celebrated musicians Alexander Mitchell (fiddle), Ralph Gordon (cello), Tom Wetmore (bass), Barry Mitterhoff of Hot Tuna (mandolin), Evan Stover of Fiddle Fever (fiddle and viola), and Shelley Ensor (vocals).   

  

A virtuoso of tremendous influence in the revival of the hammered dulcimerWalt Michael's wide repertoire ranges from old-time Southern Appalachian, to Celtic, to breath-taking original compositions.  His various musical incarnations, including Bottle Hill, Michael, McCreesh & Campbell and Walt Michael & Co. have spanned over 35 years and taken him from the coal camps of Appalachia to the Closing Ceremonies of the 13th Olympic Winter Games. As a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist he has recorded fourteen albums and instructional videos, appeared at the White House, the Lincoln and Kennedy Centers and has toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, Europe and the UK.  His music has been heard on ABC-TV, NBC's Tonight Show, Broadway, BBC, TNN, CBC, OLN and PBS.  Walt's many collaborations include works with the Pilobolus Dance Theater and the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater.  Walt is the Founder and Executive Director of Common Ground on the Hill and the Artist in Residence at McDaniel College.

The Common Ground on the Hill 2012-13 Concert Series continues in both Baltimore and Westminster, with monthly shows on first Fridays in Baltimore and first Saturdays in Westminster from October, 2012, to April, 2013. Upcoming artists include the bluegrass-klezmer fusion band Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys, jazz and gospel great Joyce Scott, gospel songstress Shelley Ensor, folk legend Tom Paxton, and the elegant acoustic American music of The Kruger Brothers.

About Common Ground on the Hill

Common Ground on the Hill is a roots-based, traditional arts non-profit housed on the campus of McDaniel College in Westminster, MD. Founded in 1994, we foster and facilitate dialogue among different cultures to discover that our artistic common ground unites us. Our program includes 2 monthly concert series (in Baltimore and Westminster), 2 weeks of classes and concerts at Traditions Weeks, a Roots Music & Arts Festival, Common Ground on Seminary Ridge, the Deer Creek Fiddlers' Convention, and the Ira & Mary Zepp Center for Nonviolence and Peace Education.
