Dear neighbors,
This Monday, we will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It has been 61 years since Dr. King delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial when he was just 34 years old. More than a quarter million people participated in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom led by the NAACP, including people from all over the country of all races, genders, religions, and social classes.
I encourage residents to read the full transcript of the speech. Too often at the national level, we see politicians quote Dr. King without also acknowledging the reality that today, many of the same injustices he fought against are still present, including poverty and inequality, homelessness, unemployment, and especially in Washington, DC, denial of full representation and voting rights guaranteed to other American citizens. I believe the best way I can honor Dr. King’s legacy is to use my platform to fight injustice in all its forms, including continuing to fight to expand access to quality education, increase safe and affordable housing, support job training and creation, and advocate for DC statehood, just to name a few. And that is what I try every day to do as your Ward 3 Councilmember, in partnership with my staff, my Council colleagues, and so many passionate and dedicated constituents in Ward 3 and across the District who believe in those same just causes.
I wish you and your loved ones a meaningful Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
After the holiday, the Council Committee of the Whole will meet on Tuesday, January 21 at 11:00 am. The meeting will take place at the Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, DC, 20004, in room 500. Click here for meeting information including how to watch.

Statement on January 16 Homicide in Ward 3
I am deeply saddened by the violence that occurred overnight on January 16 in Ward 3. I have been briefed by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and appreciate their quick response. According to MPD, an adult male was shot and killed during a domestic dispute inside a residence in the City Ridge development off Wisconsin Avenue just before 2:30 am. The case is now being handled by homicide detectives and an investigation is underway.
My thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 202-727-9099 or text tips to the Department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.

Nomination to DC250 Commission
Yesterday, I had the honor of being nominated to the DC250 Commission, part of America 250. The Commission will assist in the planning and execution of the District’s 2026 celebration and commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The events surrounding the anniversary will be an opportunity to tell DC’s unique story, beyond its well-known role as the seat of federal government, and to recognize the residents who deserve full representation. The Semiquincentennial celebrations will be an exciting time in DC, and residents can stay tuned to my future communications for more updates.
